The Truth about Mondays by Linda J Lord
It’s Monday. You are living the dream; you have your own
business. You started it for reasons you can’t exactly remember, but they must
have been good ones, because you are not impulsive. Your friends and family eye
you enviously because you work from home, so you don’t really work. You can
stay in your jammies all day, drink coffee straight from the pot, and have a
beautiful meal on the table when your adoring spouse and children come home
after their difficult day out in the ‘real world.’
So, why do you feel so bad? Why do you feel like a failure
or that today is the day the world discovers that you are a fraud? These
feelings, and many others equally destructive, exist in the mind of the
solo-preneur or small business owner because self-doubt can paralyze their best
efforts.
Meet Liz Robertson. She is a single mother running an event
planning business. She dreads mornings because she has to emerge from the
dreamland where she resides at night; the place where her ideas flourish, her
bills are paid, and her son speaks respectfully to her. But the harsh sound of
her alarm clock jolts her back to reality. Reality is just not that appealing. She
stumbles through her morning routine and heads off to the office. There are
phone messages from the bank, the staff is unsettled, and it is much easier to
escape to the local coffee shop for a while.
Liz finds it difficult to accept that her business may be
shaky, because she is shaky. She is unsure about her ability to run this
business. It started out as more of a hobby while Justin was small. Then her
marriage ended and the business needed to do more. The problem was, Liz didn’t
know how to make that happen. She, like many other business owners, thought a
good idea and some technical skill would be enough. IT ISN’T.
Here are 5 things you need to know about yourself before you start a business.
1. What
do I enjoy doing, could lose track of time while doing it, and would do it for
free – but won’t?
2. What
is my personality type and how will that impact the various roles I will need
to fulfill as a business owner?
3. What
are my core values and how does this business support them?
4. What
do I need from my life to be fully functional in healthy ways?
5. What
do I really expect from this business and who do I need to become to make that happen?
Take some time to honestly answer those questions. It will
take you more than a few minutes if you have never attempted anything like this
before. Be patient.
When Liz completed this exercise, it rocked her world. She
learned a lot about who she was and where the gaps were between her desires and
her reality. Take the time to get to know who you are as a business owner – it
may well be the answer you’ve been looking for.
