Design Your Own Logo, Save a Buck, Send the Wrong Message

Guest post by: Adam Taylor

Article Overview: Most new and small business owners are faced with the plethora of challenges, not the least of which are advertising and marketing. Making the most of their investment dollar is all-important. Too often, however, the corners that get cut can prove very costly down the road. Saving a buck on professional design services can set a bad precedent and create a stigma that is sometimes unable to be undone. Making the investment in professional design services can be a very wise move for many business owners.

Design Your Own Logo, Save a Buck, Send the Wrong Message

Business owners of today are faced with many challenges, two of which are limited time and limited budgets. These restraints can really influence your advertising, marketing and growing of the business. Unfortunately, the impact is not always a positive one.

If you are a small business owner, chances are you have said (or at least thought):

• "I can't afford to advertise"
• "I have a very minimal budget to get this work done for my business"
• "I know! I'll design my own______!" (logo, website, brochure, business card)

When it comes to marketing your business, and especially when it comes to logo design, taking the cheapest solution can really thwart your efforts. Before you decide to design your own logo, or hire the least expensive professional to do it, think about the message you are sending.

Reality Check: Imagine you need work done at your house; you are renovating your kitchen. You call three local contractors and ask that they come to the house, assess the work to be performed and provide an estimate. Number one shows up in a new contractor's truck with a colorful sign on the side. He is clean and professionally dressed, and he hands you a nicely designed business card and a full-color brochure along with an estimate. Number two arrives later in an unmarked pickup truck with dirty clothes (OK, so he's been working - you respect that!) He wanders through the kitchen and hastily hands you an estimate along with a generic business card. Number three arrives half an hour late in a rattling, dented car, torn clothing and drops a cigarette butt on your driveway as he shuffles up to the house. He tracks dirt around the kitchen and eventually tells you verbally his estimate, then writes down his number on the back of a receipt and hands it to you.

All things being equal (we're talking about price now), whom do you choose? What kind of impression did each of these people make? Whom do you trust to get things done right?

Advertising is all about perception - establishing trust and credibility with your customers, in an effort to convince them to bring you their business. Do you really want to look like you saved money on your logo? Or does it make more sense to make that important investment and present your company and your services in the best light possible?

This is a crossroads that most business owners will come to eventually. And in the real world, tight budgets and time constraints are very real obstacles. But the truth is, trusting your business' image to a professional design team can be one of the best decisions a business owner can make.

Re: Email Marketing Benefits Re: Email Marketing Benefits - Email marketing is a kind of direct marketing used by marketers to communicate with potential or existing customers directly by means of email. In email marketing, sales letters are never sent in an unsolicited way, and every person on an email marketing list, gives permission and agrees to receive email messages from time to time. Here is what you should expect from email marketing service: - Automatic subscribe and unsubscribe. - Automatic removal of bad email addresses. - Automatic message delivery. - Message sending speed and flow control. - Message personalization. With such an email marketing software, you will get a great enhancement in business or e-commerce.

Can a biz website help? Can a biz website help? - Tara, A website is just another vechicle to deliver your message and keep in touch with your customers. How? well for one your email address will have your web address in it - people judge your professionalism at that level too. Some uses my clients have found beneficial when they thought it wouldn't: 1. Disseminating repetitive information to clients e.g. portfolios, FAQs. 2. Send out newsletters that link back to your webpage (costs practically nothing via email) 3. Writing articles for your industry. These articles will do two things: 1) establish your expert status. 2) Search Engine Optimize your site. 4. Run cheaper ads in print publications by directing them to your Sales message on to a page on your site. 5. Write a special report on "Logo branding" for business owners to download. You capture their email info as you have to email it to them or their mailing address and send them the report. After they have read it they will still be inclined to use your service even if you divulge every step it takes to create a logo brand. The psychology is that they fear they may still mess up and you won't. I did this with my old Web design business as a test (gave them step by step what they needed to do to setup a website) and I still got their business. I installed Trust in them that I could do it best. Those are the major ones.
Re: Those Annoying Telemarketers Re: Those Annoying Telemarketers - When I was making phone calls I received 2 different messages that really stood out... Message 1: "We can't come to the phone right now. If you're a telemarketer please remove this number from your records. All other calls...." I never bothered to hear the rest because I wasn't allowed leaving messages anyway. I had to actually talk to the person. Message 2: "This phone number is protected by Embarq Privacy Services (something like that). Please leave your name, phone number and reason for call, and the party you're trying to reach will determine if the call is important to them." I summarized, but you get the point. Embarq is a local phone company. I don't know if it's available nationwide or not. That's a new one on me, though. I utilize caller ID on my cell. Unless it's a local number, I don't bother to answer. If it's important enough they'll leave a message. I use my cell for online and offline business since it has these capabilities as well as voicemail. Gotta love technology.
Re: what position to request? Re: what position to request? - Hi Michael, Great suggestion from David, or you could try something around a design consultancy, How about Website Design Consultant, Design and Development Manager, Website Support and Development Manager or maybe Internet Business Development Consultant. Ultimately whatever you are comfortable with and good luck for the future, Mal.
