Packaging Web Design: Pros and Cons

Pricing is one of the most difficult tasks for designer and client alike. Designers have thoughts about what their time and skills are worth, but clients might, and often do, have different opinions on that. In order to simplify this discrepancy, some designers offer packaged pricing options. There are both pros and cons to using package-based pricing. Although it isn't overwhelmingly popular to used package-based pricing in the web design industry, the following examples are positives to consider. Package-based pricing allows potential clients to see exactly what they will get for the money they are willing to spend. It also saves time for both the designer and the client because price quotes can take some time. Packaging also lets the designer define exactly what services are involved, which helps avoid confusion later down the road. Less confusion and better understanding upfront makes for better efficiency down the road.

While there are quite a few pros to package-based pricing, there are also many reasons that many designers shy away from using it. The main reason designers avoid package-based pricing is because they recognize that each project is unique and requires flexibility in customization and pricing. Package-based pricing tends to reduce the overall number of inquiries because of the sticker shock. It is also hard to create packages that offer a wide range of services, and without a large range, the packages can appear very cookie cutter. Lastly, designers that do package-based pricing wind up doing custom quotes anyway because not everyone will fit in the parameters of each package.
