Having a Facebook account or even updating a weekly blog (short for weblog) is one thing but attracting attention to them, i.e. getting traffic, is quite another. To do so effectively one needs two strategies: offline marketing (which will be dealt with elsewhere) and online marketing, the thrust of these writings.

Generating Traffic through Online Marketing

Currently, there are a number of online options which you can utilize to generate traffic for your website. In online marketing, you have to consider the internal and external factors present.

Some external factors ideas to keep in mind are:

• Get your URL to as many search engines as you can. For this strategy Google is by far the most common search engine that is used. Given its popularity Google can also get you to other popular search engine sites, Bing, Lycos, etc., by basically searching them.
• It is important that you verify that your web links are intact, not broken or defective. Obviously, if there is a problem this will negate your main objective of having an effective online campaign to generate your sought after volume of traffic.

Of internal factors which matter, here are some suggestions that can definitely give your site visitor a good impression:

• Create content that has value for your reader. On the personal side these could include your memorable experiences; your best vacation, an unpleasant encounter and how you dealt with it, a movie review, you get the idea. On the other side of the equation you might be trying to establish some trust with potential customers. In this situation you might provide some practical "how to" tips for free, or even some free product search advice. In essence, anything that you feel that when published and read, will add something to your readers lives such as awareness, helpful hints about living and even something financially rewarding.
• Let your writing represent your personality. If you decide to make your writing a fun project for both you and your audience it will generally show through.
• Be aware of the reason you want or need to generate traffic to your site. Do you see yourself as the online marketer or an online advice column such as "Dear Abby"?
• Always consider the audience you are serving. Customer service is paramount.
• High site traffic can generate significant monetary rewards. How much is really up to you and the effort and thought that you put into your site. The degree of effort can make this a hobby or a full-time occupation

In summary, the ideas, hints, tips above can be condensed into one theme which is to focus on providing value content to your reader.
