Act like your business is worth it

How many times have you heard the phrase "Act like your business is worth £1m" and left thinking that although that would be nice, there is no way you could do that because you just don't have the money. Me too!

And then, the other day I reached an epiphany. By this phrase, people don't mean to actually spend money like your business is worth £1m.

What they mean is categorised by the word "ACT". Let me explain what I realised.

How would a business turning over £1m act? Would you walk down the street with your head up or your head down? Would you make a conscious effort with your appearance? Would you shake hands confidently?

And then what about your business?

If you were turning over £1m, would you answer the phone within 3 rings? Would you reply to emails and get back to people quickly? Would you give an impeccable service and have high standards of customer care?

Of course you would!

Acting like your business is worth £1m is nothing to do with spending money. It's all to do with delivering a great quality service and thinking about how you personally come across when you meet and deal with people.

A good way to get a introduction into what I mean is by getting your partner to treat you to a top meal at a fantastic restaurant. How do they do things? Do they make you feel special? Are the waiters clean, smart and have impeccable manners?

And then try to emulate what they do in your own business.

So, what I discovered the other day when driving down the road is about ACTING like your business is worth £1m. It's about making that extra special effort with your appearance, with your clothes, with your smile, with the way you answer the phone, with your customer service.

But all of these things can be achieved without spending a penny.

Here's your challenge then (if you want to take me up on it - and yes, I'd love to hear how you got on): imagine your business is turning over £1m+. Now, what would you do differently? How would you make sure your clients and customers get access to the fantastic service that you provide?

Once you've done this exercise, make an effort to put into place some of the things you've written down within your business.

It would do any of us any harm to think about how the clients or customers that pay us the most money deserve to be treated and then go out of our way to make sure they're treated that way. Try it and you might be pleasantly surprised!

Is "Good" - Good Enough Is "Good" - Good Enough - I was just reading the thread about whether people need a business plan and this idea hit me. Someone commented that if you don't have a business plan and you're doing all right - then why spend the time or money. But, is doing good or doing all right - good enough? Maybe you're a business that is getting by and making the bills. What if, taking the time to really evaluate your business with a detailed business plan could help you see places to make some changes which could take your business to the next level? Would it be worth your time? I think it would definitely be worth the time. That could be because I've worked with a number of business owners who were "getting by", but once they committed to having someone evaluate the business - they saw a drastic increase in their revenue. So, why couldn't or wouldn't an entrepreneur do an evaluation to determine where the business is, where it isn't working and where it should be going? This could be done in a business plan format. Just some random thoughts. Shri
ownership vs control ownership vs control - As I tell my clients - the important first decision is whether you would rather own 100% of a business worth 10 million or 10% of a business worth 100 million. The monitary value to you is the same but there are many other factors.
How do you value a firm How do you value a firm - Hello, I've been trying to raise $50,000 for my online business but every time I approach an investor, they ask me how much is my business currently worth. One person was willing to give me $20,000 but for 33% equity. He says "I value your website for $40,000", I have no idea how he came across that number. My website was developed by a business partner for free but he says he would have charged no less than $15,000 if it was some other client. We are currently generating about 7000 unique visitors after being online for 10 months and we're grossing about $1200 every month. There has to be some value for our developed portfolio and a community of about 500 members and over $5000 we have already spent on link-building for SEO. The name of our business is "Logo Arena" you can search it on google. Please give me some estimate of what it could be truly worth so I can start negotiating equity. Thank You all for your time
Harsh reality Harsh reality - I am a patent agent and an entrepreneur. Two questions. Question 1: Are you willing to invest $60K and two years into this invention? If YES Question 2: How can you protect your investment? This may seem harsh but if you don't invest who will. In my opinion, a patent has zero value, (and is in fact a liability), until the invention that it protects is generating or dang close to generating revenue, with a chance for profit. A patent is an insurance policy. Like every insurance policy, you have to buy before you know what's going to happen. My typical patent preparation fee is $6-9K. Is it worth it? That depends. Is your life insurance policy worth it? That depends. The real value in any invention is the business that is built around it. If you have what it takes to build a business around an invention then filing a patent is a business decision. Like all business decisions you make it and you keep going. If it was a bad decision, you deal with it.
Staying accountable for your goals Staying accountable for your goals - Hi Martin, You bring up a good point. Many entrepreneurs set goals and don't follow through because life gets in the way. If it's a goal worth doing then it will be difficult to reach. What we've set up here in Toronto is an entrepreneur Mastermind Group where business owners come together every month to discuss their goals, update their progress, and help each other overcome challenges. It might be something worth looking into where you are. Many of our members have found that talking to friends and family is nice but unless they own their own businesses, they don't understand what you're going through and can only offer emotional support as supposed to practical advice. Good luck!
