Is marketing about getting organised?

Whenever I recruit for a new member of the team, I usually don't ask for someone with marketing experience, but more for someone who is organised and has good admin skills. Why?

Because the vast majority of marketing I personally think is admin based and about being organised. Think about it:

• Making calls to potential clients and following up

• Sending out emails

• Creating newsletters

• Writing brochures, literature etc

• Following up after networking events

To name but a few possible marketing tasks are all admin based, so when you're doing your own marketing, if you're good at admin and you're organised, you're not going to go far wrong.

But, let's look at when this is a problem. It's so easy for marketing not to work because of lack of organisation.

Imagine going to a networking event and then following up with everyone afterwards. Great job - that's exactly what you should be doing.

But then imagine in the follow up email saying that you've met someone at the networking event when you haven't - that's down to organisation.

Here are some other areas where organisation plays a big part in marketing:

1. Not having a list of everyone who has expressed interest in your products and services so that you can properly follow them up

2. Not updating your website on a regular basis

3. Missing meetings and deadlines because you haven't put them in the diary

4. Not sending information you've promised to someone who has asked for it

5. Running out of business cards before a networking event because you've forgotten to order some more.

Not being organised creates an impression of you and your business which can reflect very badly if someone is looking to use your products and services. Because marketing is so much about admin and being organised, it will serve you well to get some help in this area if it's not one of your strong points. You might want to consider:

• Going on a training course about organisation and time management.

• Hiring someone who has got skills in this area to help you out.

• Working with a virtual assistant who can handle everything for you.

Whatever you decide to do, getting organised can often be the key to making marketing work for you, so it's well worth getting sorted!

Re: Are entrepreneur women more organized than men? Re: Are entrepreneur women more organized than men? - Women are generally more organised than men. They have good instincts more than men. Women are generally aggressive when it come to business. You don't want to mess up with them.
Beautiful business Beautiful business - A beautiful business is a business that always puts smile on the faces of people. You must always give satisfactory results to suit both clients and your business. You could also help charity organisations through contributions, it could also get you cost effective organised prublicity. So now, you use a stone to catch lots of birds.
Re: The Da Vinci Method Re: The Da Vinci Method - Hi Julie, Thank you for bringing this book to our attention. It certainly looks a good read and it makes sense I guess when you see the list of greats who fall into that category. I can’t say I match up with all the traits but I can certainly relate to most of them. I generally like to be organised and methodical but then I also like a bit of risk and reward in my life. My sudden bursts tend to come when I am writing articles, nothings happens upstairs for a while and then whoosh, an article comes from nowhere and I get that sudden burst of energy to get it done straight away. I suppose procrastination is the enemy of all Entrepreneurs and I try very hard not to let those forces of darkness slow me down, LOL, regards, Mal.
Re: Why Did You Become An Entrepreneur? Re: Why Did You Become An Entrepreneur? - Hi members, This is a great post by Evan and I am late getting on board but I thought I would ad my few cents worth, LOL. I must say that wanting to be an Entrepreneur or work for myself has never ever meant that I wanted to have my own company, that has never been my motivation. My motivation has always been to work from home and be in control of my life, nothing else. Just to be able to organise my life around working from home would be a dream come true for me and is something I am striving for. I have always been a fairly organised sort of person so the old trap of giving myself too much time off would probably work just the opposite for me. I would be so frightened of failure I would probably work too much. There is an old saying which goes something like ’If you love what you do then you never do a days work in your life’. It is something like that anyway and for many of us, working from home would seem like that, it certainly would for me, regards, Mal.
