What Is A Media Kit And Why Do You Need One?

You know you should have one but you are not sure what is included in a Media Kit and why you should have one any way?

Well a Media Kit is a pack/folder/DVD that is made available to members of the press fraternity who are following up on a publishing opportunity or have heard about your company and want to see if there is a story there! Journalists are short of time and are always working to tight deadlines so give them so you want to help them as much as possible. A published story is great free advertising and you obviously want them to show off your company and product in the best possible way.

A Media Kit is either handed out by your communications department or downloaded from your web site. In its simplest format it is a pdf document at it’ more complex it is an all singing, all dancing DVD complete with MsPowerPoint presentations.

Your Media Kit contains information in the following three sections:

Contact details
You want them to be able to contact the right person as easily and quickly as possible.
• Contact details of your press office.
• Registered and Head office address.
• Business cards.

Company information
Think of it as a snapshot of your business.
• Business briefings.
• The demographics and numbers of your purchasers.
• An overview of your last published accounts.
• Profiles or short bios of your key executives.
• Your company’s

Details to encourage publication
Give them some ideas as what to write. Make it as easy as possible for them.
• Some recent interesting things about your company.
• Recent press releases.
• Details of your business that can put in any articles about the company.
• Current projects.
• Recent news about your company including.
• Recent product releases.
• Products due for release.
• Any samples of products.
• Any high quality photos that would be appropriate – e.g. products or executives.
• Testimonials.

Ensure that everything is available in a quality folder and/or as one easy download. Now make your media kit easy to obtain and let your journalists know about it by preparing a press release.

Good luck!

I will tell you that the world is about 1 1/2 behind when it comes to understanding social media. Building a section now will put EvanCarmichael.com is a great position a year down the road when people realize Social Media can produce more traffic than SEO. Jeff

Re: UPDATES: New Campaign! New Layout! New Ideas! Re: UPDATES: New Campaign! New Layout! New Ideas! - GT - thanks for the FYI - I'm not sure if we'll put a link back. Something to consider though! Trent - the new category is "Social Network and Media" which was put in to compliment the Online Businesses category that currently exists. Overall the new categories are: - Looking For, Networking and Events - Review My... - Social Network and Media - Brags and Rants These came as a result of Ringo doing research on other forums and thinking about what could be improved on ours to give a better experience for everyone. I hope you enjoy them! David, I'm looking forward to reading your Brag / Rant!
Re: Social Media Marketing Ignorance Re: Social Media Marketing Ignorance - [quote="vbn411":7qciluxl]Social Media is space that you have to be in to succeed in our current climate. People are going to be discussing your brand / product whether you like it or not, so you might as well join the conversation and add value. [/quote:7qciluxl] I think that's probably one of the most realistic way to think about it. There's no real textbook way of understanding Social Media, it's the networks of people and their interactions that will exist with or without your input. As for Jennifer, You can always have 2 Facebook pages. Many people do. There is also LinkedIn, which is like a professional networking version of Facebook. The only way to know is to try it.
