B2B Marketing - a Look at Today's Crazy, Complex World

Last Thursday I attended the SDL Engage Summit in New York City. The keynote speaker was Brian Solis of the Altimeter Group (and author of the book Engage or Die) in NYC.Brian Solis

Interesting session to say the least.

The key topic discussed was the fast-changing world of B2B marketing today. I cannot over-state this.

The world is moving faster than ever!

Robert Carroll, CMO of SDL gave a nice presentation on the exploding choices and options presented in B2B marketing with the avalanche of technologies and empowerment options like smart phones, social media and online video. As a result, buyers are empowered more than at any time in history.

Robert described how CMOs awaken at 3:00am, concerned about change. "What do I do first?" was their overriding question (with an over-whelming list of choices.)

Brian's theme was the "Connected Consumer" and how he/she is revolutionizing the world of B2B marketing. For a presentation on what a connected consumer is, check out this presentation by Razorfish:

They are hyper connected, social sharing, passionate users.

Brian's other key point is this does not just pertain to millennials, but is every age group. To illustrate his point, Brian asked the audience of 150 or so "Who here does not have a smartphone?" Not a single hand went up.

The implication on B2B marketing is profound. The buyers of tomorrow are mobile and sharing freely with other. (People in the meeting were sharing - twitting comments and images in real time.) As a result, approaches of the past, such as blasting out emails, webinars, podcasts - do not work like they used too.

What are we to do in B2B marketing? As Robert said several times, CMOs are thinking "Where do I start?"

I have the answer. Start at the beginning - Buyer Personas. The nature of this tsunami of change means we need answers like never before, so the pressure to really know prospective buyers is greater than ever.

Buyer personas is no longer a one-time exercise. It needs to become an ongoing, regular research project. Buyers are on the move - new social media choices, new devices like the iPad, and more. Your research needs to keep up with them. I'm coining the term, Buyer Personas 2.0, to illustrate the depth and ongoing demands of today's world.

Here's the bottom line:

You need far deeper insights than you ever had before. You need buyer personas 2.0.

Re: In-House or Outsource? Re: In-House or Outsource? - Unfortunately, in the South African context, very few SMEs see outsourcing as an option. They believe it is too expensive, and they are paranoid that someone will "steal their ideas". I believe that the three main functions that cannot be outsourced are marketing, sales and strategy. These must be done in house I believe. If you do not have the marketing skills then get them. Hire a consultant or attend a course, but get the skills. Even if you use a consultant, you need to understand what marketing is about, as no one knows your market like you do. Marketing is made to seem difficult and complex, but everyone who really understands their markets, can easily learn to do their own marketing. In South Africa, labour legislation is extremely inflexibile, and consequently labour broking is a large industry. This is an ideal starting point for SMEs in South Africa, as it is a legally complex area, whih comes with severe penalties. I say do it! Rob Smorfitt

Internet Marketing Internet Marketing - Creativity or originality would be good words. you might want to try two words; after all, you are trying to suggest a complex idea that combines at least two concepts: marketing and internet. in other words, the concept has to evoke an action (marketing), how (honestly, responsibly?) and by what means you are going to carry that action out (internet). I hope this helps; Good luck!

Re: Some motivation when the going gets rough Re: Some motivation when the going gets rough - Hi There, How about this, here are the ten top questions to ask yourself every day: 1. "Who do I need to say "I love you" to today?" 2. "What will I do today to insure I remain at the highest level of health possible, now and in the future?" 3. "What am I most grateful for right now?" 4. "What 3 actions must I take today to meet my daily, weekly, monthly, annual, ten year and life long goals? 5. "Who needs to hear from me today?" 6. "What new things will I learn today?" 7. "Whose life can I influence for good today?" 8. "What am I doing today to generate an above average income?" 9. "What am I doing today to create an eternal legacy?" 10. "What is happening today that will be so important that I must record it in my journal?" I have seen this somewhere and I tweaked it a little. In order we are able to say: "Never give up!" , one has need to start something. Be blessed
