Small Business Owners Can't Hire Good Staff

Guest post by: Calvin Warr

Article Overview: When you are a small business owner, the dilemma is quite ironic. On the one hand you need good people, and on the other, you know good people want to receive good pay. That is easier said than done when you are on a tight budget!

Small Business Owners Can't Hire Good Staff

Many small business owners are not tight fisted, not stingy with the money. Yet, they find a challenge to hire good people.

There are many reasons for this:

- size of company limits career growth

- size of turnover limits salary increments

- scope of business

There are many other reasons. Sometimes, it could be as silly as not having a good coffee machine!

How then can you get good people?

The most important thing you must remember is that it takes a special person to run a small business and to grow it. Therefore, it takes special people to work in such a company too. When interviewing, understand that PERSONALITY is actually a big factor. In fact, it could be argued that a candidate that "fits" better with a company versus another who has better "qualifications" might be the better choice.

As a small business, you likely have not more than a few employees. Even if you had 50 - 100 people, many of them might be running around outside (you know what I mean). This means that the office is going to be cosy whether you like it or not. When a small group is brought into close proximity, personalities do matter; a lot.

Another mistake in hiring is to put too much hope on the "big guns". These are successful corporate types who has made significant contributions in large organizations, whether in sales or marketing or client management. Past success is not the only gauge for your new hire. Their success could be due to a lot of factors that might not be present in your small business. Worse, being used to a large corporate environment, they might not be able to fit well into your team.

If you are able to hire staff on a "performance" basis, you might be able to get really good people who get really good payouts. This is possible. For example, if you tie bonuses to specific company targets and you make sure that each team member is properly rewarded, you can actually have a highly motivated, highly paid team.

Many business owners shy from this because the resultant payouts could be huge. But thinking along those lines is just short term.

If they can swing it, I say pay them.
