No More “Web-Based” Companies
It is conceivable that the economic conditions will spell the end of “web-based” businesses. Not because anything will happen to them, but the conditions will mean that all companies must become “web-based” to survive and the distinction won’t mean anything.
As crowded as it is now, the internet will take on yet more players, all vying for a shrinking market. A smaller market does not mean fewer consumers, it means they will be more discerning in their purchases and they will use the internet to research and qualify what they buy.
With more competition and the need to provide more information, how is your company going to get attention in the internet crowd?
By design. Consumers are incredibly net savvy now and, with the added need for more product information in tight times, they will make ever faster decisions about which companies to choose. Your web design sets the first impression for web visitors. With decisions to stay on the site, or even buy, made in fractions of seconds, your web design might be the most important part of your site.
Whatever you do, do not rush out and get the latest, slickest design. This isn’t a beauty pageant. When they behold your site, consumers have a very practical purpose. They want to solve a need and the sooner and easier it is for them to understand that your web site offers the right solution, the more likely they will be to convert into customers.
Conversely, if anything about their initial impression causes them to click away, they might never return.
So, there’s a lot riding on your web design. The most successful designs focus on the needs of the visitor, conveys the information they seek and gives them many opportunities to become customers.
Every part of your web site design should focus on converting your visitors. If not, it is probably focused on sending them away.
