How can software for email marketing increase delivery rates?
Can the delivery rate of your email marketing material be improved by using email marketing software? There are plenty of elements of the deliverability of your email that you should be taking responsibility for but providers of web based email marketing software also have their part to play. These are just a couple of things that an ESP should be helping with: IP address issues: Your readers ISP decides if your email will be delivered so it is important that they rate the quality of your email. As a marketer, you need to ensure that you follow the best practices to avoid seeing mail coming from your IP address classed as spam. Once your emails are classed as spam you will have an uphill struggle to improve your email marketing as they will not be seen by readers. This will certainly indicate to you that you need and want your own IP address. If your ESP uses the same IP address for other clients you could potentially see your delivery rates effected by other marketers practices. You do need to consider volume though. If you arent sending many emails then you wont build a reputation with ISPs so if this is the case you may reconsider sharing the same IP address as other clients.
Authentication of emails: ISPs check the authenticity of senders before they allow email into users inboxes. There are a couple of groups that the ISP is trying to protect themselves against; spammers and phishing scams. The growth of phishing scams in particular has increased the important of verifying the identity of senders as these scammers often pretend to represent banks. You will find that web based email marketing software providers have tools that you can use to authenticate your emails.
Two main problems come from not authenticating email: Your email can be blocked by the ISP. It is more likely that you email will be classed as spam even if the ISP doesnt actively block it. The email is likely to be delivered along with a warning message if it is delivered at all. With either outcome your email is less likely to be read by the user.
So there is a great deal that you email marketing software company should be doing to help you. I plan to write more articles on this topic as there are so many considerations.
