Text Message Marketing – Is it Better for Consumers’ Health?
Are You Giving Customers a Headache with Social Media?
I don’t think I’m alone in this overload. Messages are everywhere for me and for your customers. We have ads, emails, Tweets, Facebook updates, videos, and more competing for our attention – every day, thousands of times a day.Social media will definitely help you attract the attention of some consumers. However, you won’t get everyone all the time. Consumers are not always plugged into you. So, you have to wave a message, status update, Tweet or even a stuffed pig (I’ve done this) to get them to focus on you for an instant. And, you have to repeat this cycle – constantly. Hence, the headache.
Texting – Proven Healthier Communications
That’s why texting is such a different part of the marketing mix. Consumers are typically plugged into their phones, but they can respond to texts on their terms. They don’t have to filter as they do with social media. And, now texting may be better for your health. Especially now that the World Health Organization says talking on cell phones may increase the risk of cancer by adding cell phone radiation to their list of “possible carcinogens.”
Texting – Reducing the Risk of Cancer?
Interestingly, texting helps alleviate this risk. In a follow-up story to the WHO announcement, CNN says “many mobile phone manufacturers advise customers to keep the phone at least a fraction of an inch away from their body when it's transmitting data.”Plus, the report says cell phone users are not talking nearly as much as they are texting.
Consumers Like Texting More, Anyway
According to a J.D. Power & Associates survey, consumers only made 21 calls or voicemail checks in a 48-hour period. In contrast, those surveyed reported sending and receiving 55 text messages in the same time period.
This potential bad news is good for those thinking of adding SMS messaging to the marketing mix. Social media, email and traditional marketing are still important, but adding a channel – texting – is healthier and reaches your customer where they are – in chats on their phone. Here are a few ideas for making the most of this health news with texting:
- Make it a paper or digital campaign. Use your other channels (paper, social media and e-mail) to announce that texting is healthier than talking. Ask your customers to text you instead of call for healthy deals.
- Text the news of health. Is your shop or restaurant known for healthy goods? Text the news that text alerts are better for your health. Offer a special for new text subscribers.
- Use the preference angle. Your text signup promotion campaign could look like this: “Sick of going to Twitter or Facebook to get deals? Get text alerts instead. It’s less work on you, after all.”
