How To Name Your Business, Website and/or Brand
Struggling with choosing a name for your service business?
Too many small businesses try to start by choosing a name without really thinking about what their business is going to be all about.
The name of your business is like the candle on the top of the birthday cake. A candle with no cake under it is not much of a birthday wish, right?
When you name your business, you've got to bake the cake first, so you can hold that candle up. The cake if your brand's message. Think about:
- What your brand’s all about: What does your business mean? What does it value, or stand for?
- The emotion you want your brand to convey: How do you want your clients to feel when they encounter you?
- Who your ideal clients are and what sorts of words would best communicate with them: What do they want to hear?
- What your ideal clients really want from working with you and how they want to feel: What do they want to have happen when they work with you?
- Available as a domain name (preferably a .com)
- Not trademarked by another company
- Memorable
- Easy to say and understand – without spelling it out (especially important in teleseminars, radio shows and voice mail)
- Doesn’t “look weird” in print (some words just look bizarre)
- Feels great for you to say and own!
If you keep all of this in mind, you'll come up with a strong name that will make your company sound good for years to come.
