Lessons from the Mazatlan Marketplace
Greetings from sunny Mazatlan, Mexico. I'm taking some R&R from my recent trip to Kenya. Life is rough. :-)
Yesterday, we went down to the local marketplace here in Mazatlan where I witnessed several strokes of marketing genius. In fact, If any of you have visited Mexico you'll know that the local merchants are VERY aggressive.
They're also very smart marketers...for the most part. Today, I'll share with you just a few marketing tips that I've witnessed while vacationing here in sunny Mazatlan.
The Power of Bundling
After a beautiful sailing trip around the islands of Mazatlan on Monday we hit the beach. I saw a merchant selling shirts that attracted me.
I immediately picked out the one I like the most and asked him how much it costs. He said that he would sell it to me for 200 pesos ($20).
Well, anyone who's been to Mexico knows that the first price quote is only the start of a negotiation session...so I told him I would only pay 120 pesos.
Instead of countering on my first offer, he smartly changed the offer on me with a new bundled offer. He offered me not one, but two shirts for 250 pesos.
There was another shirt I like so I immediately countered on his offer with a more reasonable price and the deal was done.
Lessons Learned
Here are some important lessons from this buying experience.
Lesson 1 - Always create an offer that sells on value rather than price.
Notice that the merchant changed the offer to increase its value, which immediately forced me to negotiate at a higher price based on the increased value.
A simple application of this is when a printer (or another other small business) gets a request for price quote on a printing job and immediately returns with a direct quote.
What is there to separate that printer's quote from all the other quotes? Nothing. That's why I always tell businesses to quote on proposals and RFQ's based on products and services that are above and beyond what the merchant asked for. This way, your quote is always different and is based on added value.
Lesson 2 - Bundle products and services to increase the perceived value.
You can use a 2 for 1 bundle offer or simply bundle other products and services that the buyer would perceive as valuable.
When you do this, the buyer now determines whether he/she wants to buy based on value, rather than on straight price.

Lesson 3 - Cross Sell and Up sell During the Buying Activity There's no better time to gain additional sales than while the buyer has their wallet or purse open and they're in the buying mood.
The moment I opened my wallet, other merchants swarmed around me in order to sell their goods. The net result is that I ended up buying a beautiful carved iron wood horse, some hand made baskets, and a pair of cool sunglasses.
In fact, the people I was with ended up buying a lot of stuff from them too!
But each of the merchants were selling stuff that was different than my first shirt purchase. In essence, they were cross selling me goods that they believed I might want because I purchased the shirts.
Every small business owner should identify specific goods and services that they can offer to cross sell and up sell during the selling activity.
Just a small change in your customer's average purchase amount can make a big change in your bottom line.

Napoleon on Project Management
- Why do I include this in a list of books aimed at female entrepreneurs? Well...in the expectation that there are as many female history buffs as male ones, and in the belief that anyone interested in history will find this book fascinating, while those interested in project management will learn a thing or two.
I think this was the first "gimmick" book - an author using a historical figure (usually a male, military figure, it must be admitted) to talk about modern day business management. I refuse to read any of the kind that advocates - even obliquely - the techniques of the Sopranos or the Mossad - but these military ones are pretty fun.
Anyway:
Only in the understanding of history, Napoleon might say, do we gain an understanding of strategy in the present. MySpace, Facebook, et al
- About a month or so ago there was a discussion on doing marketing through Facebook, but for the life of me now I can't find it.
So, what the heck, I'll start another thread on the subject and a moderator can move the posts to a different thread or delete or whatever...
Anyway, I had set up my Facebook account without much expectation, but full of hope that thousands of people would soon be hitting my ezine. Hope lost!
However, I'd placed a couple of ads in the Marketplace section, for reviewers. I got three responses, to whom I sent more details, and then they never responded. (That really annoys me, by the way. If I send people info they request, and they don't like what they read, have the courtesy to tell me, "Thanks, but no thanks.")
Anyway, over the course of two months I finally got two reviewers out of the deal, who are now writing book and movie reviews for my webzine. The second of these is a really, really good find, as she's a presence in the independent movie business, [i:1463813n]and [/i:1463813n]she knows an artist who is willing to do some work for my zine.
So even though the hoped for thousands of readers didn't materialize, I still did quite well out of the deal and am quite happy.
Oh... and I joined MySpace six days ago. A much larger operation than Facebook, with tons of groups on all kinds of subjects. I've been unable to do anything there for seven days because of their policy of preventing that to prevent spam, apparently, but starting tomorrow I'll be "working" MySpace as well. They've got literally hundreds of groups for science fiction and fantasy movies, books, etc., so I anticipate getting much more exposure there than I ever got at Facebook.
Ebay actually drives prices up...
- I have an acquaintance who collects rare books. He went off on a rant about Ebay in his blog a couple of weeks ago. It used to be he could buy books for quite reasonable sums, but ever since Ebay debuted, people are putting their stuff up their with inflated reserve bids, and the uninformed public are buying those books at ridiculous prices...so now even book collectors that don't deal on Ebay are also inflating their prices, because if people are too stupid to know what is proper market value...
For myself, I fell victim once... not so much to a scam but to my own lack of knowledge of what I was buying...
Way back in the 70s Forrest J. Ackerman published 8 issues of a magazine called Spaceman, and I wanted them all. I also thought they were very rare and was willing to pay any price to get them.
So I bid $100 for a beat up old issue of Spacemen 1, and got it, and of course next week another issue was up there for $20. So I was not a happy camper.
Lessons are - know the market value of what you want to buy and realize that there are other places besides Ebay where you can get it.
