Dave Wright in Victoria told me about the most effective, and successful cold canvass letter he ever sent. And it's so simple!
He'd staple a $1 bill to his letterhead above this message: "This is a TAX-FREE dollar. If you would like to know how to get more of them, meet me. I'll call you next week to set up a suitable time."
Dave said that when he phoned he always got through. If a secretary tried to block him he'd say, "Tell him it's the guy who sent him the dollar." She'd come back on the line, and put him through.
Sometimes his name alone would be enough for the prospect to ask "Are you the guy who sent me the dollar?"
Of course, this was way back when we had dollar bills, and even two dollar bills. You could tape on a loony, but I think a bill is more impressive.
Fortunately, they still use them south of the border. And a crisp new American bill could impress the recipient even more than our 63 cent coin. You might also add "p.s. At to- day's exchange rate this U.S. $1 is really $1.58 TAX-FREE."
Try sending out a dozen of them this week. And let me know how effective they are at getting interviews.
