Better Than Mail Merge
In the last two issues you've learned two ways to send your email newsletter to clients, and other subscribers. Each has a downside, so I started looking for a suitable program to email TIP as the number of its subscribers grew.
Tried out one called MailLoop, and didn't find it any better than the mail-merge function of Word, despite costing $379.
Then my son told me about a program called WorldCast, which offers a free version. Tried it. Liked it. Bought it ($49).
It works much like mail-merge in that you keep your mailing list in an Excel or Access file, and write your newsletter in any word processor (even Notepad) to save as a text file. Then you use WorldCast to combine your list with your text.
Advantages it has over Word's mail-merge are:
* It costs nothing to try out;
* It solves the problems of the previous two methods;
* It validates email addresses before sending them;
* It's fast;
* It detects bad email addresses while sending;
* It provides a detailed log of each mailing;
* It accepts huge mailing lists;
* It includes a spell-checker, helpful wizard, thesaurus;
* It lets you personalize your message and subject line;
* And it lets you include attachments.
Once your list becomes too unwieldy for Word's mail-merge, try out the free version of WorldCast.

Re: Is Bulk Mailing useful for promotion
- We use Mail Chimp for our email campaigns (it's awesome and free for small lists), but we only email to subscribers. Have never tried buying a list and spamming people. I can't imagine it would be very beneficial, and will certainly create ill will from the people you spam.
Top Franchises For 2007
- Entrepreneur came out with a list of the top franchises for 2007. They are:
1. Subway
2. Dunkin' Donuts
3. Jackson Hewitt Tax Service
4. 7-Eleven Inc.
5. UPS Store, The/Mail Boxes Etc.
6. Domino's Pizza LLC
7. Jiffy Lube Int'l. Inc.
8. Sonic Drive In Restaurants
9. McDonald's
10. Papa John's Int'l. Inc.
It still seems to be dominated by food companies (70% of the list!)
Can non-food companies make it as a successful franchise?

Could be the convenience factor. I live in a reasonably small town, yet we have an unreal number of restaurants and there are so many restaurant franchises. All the food businesses shown in the top 10 are fast food and with Domino's and Papa John's, they even bring dinner to your door. Everyone eats - and more people seem to eat out all the time.

Re: E-Commerce Spending Down?
- [quote="Kevin":35jt4q4o]In addition, on eBay, the shipping cost can sometimes be free/lower to attract buyer attention, but then the still cost more than another seller who charges more for shipping.[/quote:35jt4q4o]
When I sold manga and Japanese "hanafuda" playing card decks on eBay the competition would often offer a lower product price and jack up the shipping and handling so that the total would be more expensive than my "higher priced" items!
Shipping weighty products such as mj sets from Japan by Express Mail Service means free shipping is definitely not an option.
This year my turnover has been par for the course, except August and September... August was one of the best months ever, September one of the worst! Now we seem to be chugging along at a regular rate again... despite hiking prices to adjust for the strong yen against the ever-weakening dollar.
International Shipping Costs Money!
- Here's my perspective on high "shipping" costs, as someone who ships high quality mahjong sets across the globe from Japan...
"Shipping" costs amounts to more than just the price you see on the shipping label! (That's why we call it shipping AND handling!)
For example, if you want one of my top-end mahjong sets it will cost around $65-$95 to have it shipped to you.
About $12-17 of that is eaten up by Paypal transaction charges.
The rest goes on Express Mail shipping, and NO I don't offer other methods because they do not offer any security for either party.
A set weighing 3-5kg when packed will cost around 5000-7000 yen to be shipped to the USA, more to non EU parts of Europe, and more still to South America.
And the dollar is only worth 87 yen on Paypal at the moment (down from 120 yen a few years ago...).
I haven't mentioned the cost of getting the sets from the supplier to me, or the packaging costs.
I regularly find myself "subsidising" the cost of shipping sets to places like Russia - even though Russia is one of Japan's neigbours!
The other day someone wanted to buy three high quality sets but hated the "shipping" cost - so the order fell through. No worries. I don't have time to waste on those who think shipping should be free. International shipping is an amazing service - and an expensive operation! Don't take it for granted.
