In the testing of a new drug, or pain-killer, there are some in the control group, who didn't receive it, but who exhibit the same benefits as those who did.
This placebo effect drives drug companies crazy. After all, if the control group shows an improvement in 30% of those participating, while only 32% those who got the drug felt better, there's only a 2% benefit to taking it!
So, often they'll just give one side of the story in their ads, 32% immediate improvement, which is why some drug companies are now in trouble. They hid the placebo side.
We, on the other hand, can benefit from it.
For what the placebo effect confirms empirically is that our minds can influence our bodies.
