9 Tips For Moving Home And Business

Moving house can be a hassle – especially if you’ve got to move your business with it!

Many businesses operate on a tight budget, and the cost of moving is often a real issue. Even if your budget means you don’t have to worry about removal expenses, you don’t want to throw hard earned away money.

You may be home-based, or perhaps you are relocating a larger small business, or expanding into new premises.

Whatever the case, the following tips should help your move go smoother:

When booking a removalist, you want to get the best value possible. You should discuss:

1. What size truck you need. To do your own estimate of the minimum required truck size, add 15 percent to the combined cubic space needed for all furniture and non-boxable items, then add this to the total cubic space of packed boxes to be loaded.

2. How many movers do you need? You can save money by being your own assistant if you are fit. If not, employ two movers and save your back.

3. What is the basis of the charges? If a company charges ‘depot to depot’, they charge you from the time the truck first leaves the truck depot to the time it returns to the depot after the job (whether or not it actually goes there). If a company charges ‘pickup to pickup’, they charge you from the time the truck arrives at your place plus an allowance for the time it takes to drive back to the pickup point (whether or not it actually goes there).

Other variations occur, such as a nominal return charge rather than a return to pickup or base. Some companies may provide a fixed price quote. Add up any before-and-after driving time when estimating how much you will be up for, and compare about half a dozen companies to make sure you get the best deal for you.

4. Does the quoted rate include GST? Some companies advertise what may look like a cheap rate, but do not state that GST is extra. Always ask if GST is included in the price.

5. Are there any cheap days of the week? Weekends are always heavily booked, but weekday removals, especially Tuesdays to Thursdays, can sometimes be got at a cheaper rate.

6. Are there any concessions you might be entitled to? For example, some companies offer pensioner, unemployed, or student discounts. Ask around, or check college notice boards.

7. What sort of padding and packing material does the truck carry? Plenty of large, heavy, soft padding is essential to protect your furniture during transit.

8. Is insurance provided, and what does it cover?. Fire, collision and overturning insurance does not cover your belongings against damage by the removalists - for example, if they drop your television. Property damage insurance usually carries an extra charge, and the removalists will conduct a inventory to check for existing damage before they start to move your goods.

9. How is payment to be made? You will probably need to have cash, a certified cheque, or a money order to pay the driver on the day. Personal cheques normally require prior arrangement.

Other issues that concern most people are how to get the most out of your removalist, how to get children used to the idea that they are going to move, how to settle them in to a new home, and what sort of timeframe is needed to organise the move efficiently.

Re: Trade Shows - Are They Worth It? Re: Trade Shows - Are They Worth It? - HI, I have used trade shows (not participated) to collect potential clients. For example, the Home & Garden Industry is extremely behind the time in regards to their websites. I attended an Home & Garden Expo in Denver and collected all the companies contact information. I plan on cold calling & mailing information to each business. It also gave me time to research the industry more, talk directly to the owners in many cases, and learn more about what they need.
