Small Business Coaching

Small Business Coaching

Support, direction and advice are crucial necessities for small business owners who are either starting up or trying to grow their business. However, this type of unbiased business related support can sometimes be difficult for small business owners to obtain and that is where the concept of “Small Business Coaching” comes into play.

What is small business coaching? Simply put, small business coaching is a paid service by the small business owner to the coach that is custom tailored to assist the business owner with advice, guidance, contacts, and support to start and/or develop their business.

A small business coach can assist with start up needs such as preparing the business plan, research guidance, goal setting and organizational development. Once the initial preparations and goals have been achieved a business coach can mentor on such business aspects as marketing and public relations, human resources, sales, networking, goal setting and goal completion, organizational strategies and much more.

In addition to the business side of the mentoring, small business coaching can assist with the work/like balance issues many entrepreneurs face. Time management skills will become key in ensuring entrepreneurs do not struggle with balancing their personal lives and their business lives. Motivational strategies to keep up energy and passion can be a focus to ensure the entrepreneur maintains their sense of excitement and passion for their work.

There are many different packages that can be purchased for small business coaching services. Many coaches will keep in touch regularly by setting up monthly/bi-weekly or weekly telephone sessions. As well there will be one on one face to face meetings which will assist with developing and maintaining a bond with the coach.

There is a time commitment to coaching so keep in mind that there will be regular meetings as well as potentially homework for the entrepreneur. The coach will act as an accountability partner to ensure goals are being met and new goals are created constantly so there is a forward momentum to the entrepreneur's development. Small business coaches may be empathetic to excuses but will always hold the entrepreneur accountable so prepare for some real work execution.

If you are deciding whether small business coaching is the right step for you, consider the following questions:

•  Are you willing to commit your time to regular meetings and homework?

•  Are you open to hearing someone's advice, guidance and constructive criticism?

•  Do you enjoy working in a team and enjoy professional relationships?

•  Do you work well with someone who will hold you accountable?

When looking for a small business coach, look for someone who is a fit with your personal and professional character. Loyalty, confidentiality and dependability are all traits that are a must for a good small business coach. Being a good listener and allowing you to vocalize your ideas, thoughts and concerns is also very important. Make sure you look into their background which should have a good deal of start up experience. Ask questions about the success of their own companies and make sure there is a trust and confidence fit.

For those who cannot afford the cost of a personal small business coach, Mastermind Groups are an excellent alternative and offer several experts working together in a team.
