Ordering a Starbucks Espresso is a complicated process, which if you’re not ready for, could knock you off your feet before you even get to feel that strong jolt of caffeine. From the cup to the number of shots to the actual type of espresso, ordering a Starbucks Espresso seems to be just as much of an art as preparing the actual drink itself.

When you first walk into the store, you need to have a plan. Are you going to get your Starbucks espresso to go or are you going to relax in the seductive in-store environments, towards which company executives have spent millions of dollars in an attempt to keep you in their stores indefinitely. Here, your options for your Starbucks espresso include ‘with legs’ (to go), ‘for here’, or ‘personal’ (bring your own cup).

After you’ve made the difficult decision about which cup to have your Starbucks espresso in, you need to decide how many shots of espresso you actually want in your drink. A ‘solo’ Starbucks espresso has a single shot, whereas a ‘doppio’ has two shots of espresso. If you are feeling brave or just extremely tired, you could also go for the ‘triple’ or ‘quad’ Starbucks espresso, which contains three and four shots respectively.

So now you’ve got your cup for your Starbucks espresso selected, you’ve chosen how many shots you want in it, are you finished? Is the complicated ordering process over? If it were, it wouldn’t be complicated.

The next step in ordering your Starbucks espresso is determining which type of espresso you actually want to have. If you are not fussy, or you just don’t know your espresso, the barista will serve you the default Starbucks espresso – the regular. If you don’t need an extra jolt of anything, you can ask for the ‘unleaded’ Starbucks espresso, or the decaf. Then, there is also the ‘half-caf’, which is a double Starbucks espresso with one shot of decaf and one shot of regular. Finally, the true connoisseur might ask for the ‘ristretto’ Starbucks espresso, which is a short pull of espresso that consists of only the sweetest portion.

The fourth set of decisions that you need to make is just how big you want your Starbucks espresso to be. You can order either a ‘short’, ‘tall’, ‘grande’, or ‘venti’, but you take your chances the larger you go. At 20-ounces, the venti is not a laughing matter. A venti quad ristretto Starbucks espresso might just sent your entire body into a state of shock.

Finally, you only have one more step to go until you have your Starbucks espresso in your hands. What would Starbucks be without its syrups? From vanilla to sugar-free vanilla to caramel to almond to raspberry, you can add a little extra taste to your Starbucks espresso with a shot of one of their syrups.

Of course, you could spend another hour trying to decide what type of milk you want in your Starbucks espresso, and how you like your foam. But all that is to say that properly ordering a Starbucks espresso is a complex process. By the end of it, you might just need that extra kick to wake you up.
