Interested in finding a free training workshop for new entrepreneurs? You can find it online. Want to be able to pay your taxes without having to ever change out of your pajamas? Now you can, all with the help of a handy little tool my grandfather likes to call the Interweb. From paying your taxes, to paying your bills, to finding an insurance broker, the world of online personal finance just keeps getting bigger. But, how much do you really know about the virtual reality that is the Internet? Just how secure is it and how can you learn to best protect yourself and your business from the online threats that can arise on a daily basis?
Most people know all too well the annoying nature of spam, but the dangers of the Internet go well beyond that. Email and spywire can be used by those wishing to steal your identity and commit fraud, and they’re getting more and more creative in their techniques. Unless you’ve protected yourself well, it doesn’t take much for these cyber criminals to get a hold of your online passwords, account information, credit card numbers, and other sensitive information relating to you and your business. The good news, however, is that there are ways to prevent yourself from falling victim to their scams.
First and foremost, beware of any emails from people you don’t know. If you do mistakenly open one, make sure to never open any attachments and avoid clicking on any links in the message. Remember that security certificates are your friend – check them whenever you are on a website where you’re about to enter any confidential financial information. Also, install a pop-up blocker and don’t accept any offers to install any free programs that claim they will solve all your financial problems. Trust me, they won’t!
Besides being wary of emails and websites, there are also a number of ways you can protect your computer and personal information before you even enter the world of online personal finance. Consider setting up a firewall and make sure your hard drive has installed on it the latest versions of both an anti-virus and an anti-spyware program. McAfee, Trend Micro, and Microsoft Anti-Spyware are all good bets. Also, keep your operating system up to date, as Windows 95 and the like were built before the mainstream rise in popularity of the Interweb. When all else fails, your strategy of last resort should always be to backup your data.
According to the U.K. Payments Association, the majority of people using the online services of banks do not understand the basics of online security. And, even where people know about the threats, they do little to protect themselves from them.
You may think you’re cunning, and maybe you are, but there are people out there who make a living out of defrauding victims online. Don’t let them think they’re more cunning than you by falling pray to their scams. Protect your computer and use caution when dealing with the world of online personal finance. It may be convenient to do things on the Internet, but without the proper protection, it can harm you and your business more than it will help.
