Personal Finance Budget
Some people hate them. Some people love them so much they say having one has even helped their sex life! Well, I wouldn’t go that far, but budgeting is one of those necessary evils that we all need to come to grips with. The price of not having a sound personal finance budget will always and everywhere far outweigh whatever stress you experience from making one.
The first step to creating a successful budget is to stop thinking of it as a jail. Budgets are not meant to limit your freedom, but rather to help you secure your way to greater financial freedom in the end. Drawing one up does not have to be a gloom and doom affair. Instead, look at it as your chance to create the future of your dreams!
Budgets are your way of finding out whether you’re heading in the right direction. Done properly and early enough, they should put you in control of your money, instead of the other way around. You wouldn’t want your government operating without one, and so neither should you. However painful a process it may be to start, in the end, it should actually give you more of the space and security you need to do the things you have always wanted to do.
The first step to creating a successful personal finance budget is to identify where the money you are currently earning is going. Examine your spending patterns and see where you can make adjustments. Set goals for your future financial objectives and think about what you’ll need to do to reach those. Make sure you keep your goals realistic. Once you’ve done that, keep track of your future spending to make sure it stays within those guidelines.
Be honest with yourself while you’re doing it. Create categories that fit your own personal spending habits. Note down accurate income levels. Record truthfully how you are spending your money, and remember all of those trips to the ATM. Also, don’t forget to include all of those one-time expenses that don’t fall under your regularly scheduled monthly payments. As you start to do this, I guarantee you will be surprised as to where some of your money is going.
Your records should be detailed, but not so much so that you will begin to see keeping them accurately as a huge chore. Most importantly, it shouldn’t be taking up a significant part of your life. It should be helping you live to your fullest!
Nowadays, more and more people are using software to help plan their personal finance budget. Programs such as Quicken and Microsoft Money can be huge time-savers in creating a budget for you. They will quickly identify whether or not you are living beyond your means.
But, whether you do it on paper or online, remember not to think of it as a chore. Try and see the process of organizing your money matters as an enjoyable one that is helping to secure a better life for you and your loved ones.
