Dennis Gartman Is a Trading Master
A profile of success
Dennis Gartman goes all the way back to the early 1970's. As an economist, he analyzed the supply and demand of cotton. He then went on to trade the foreign exchange, and other money market instruments. In the late 1970's, Gartman was the Chief Financial Futures analyst for A.G. Becker in Chicago, Illinois. After that, he traded bonds, and other futures contracts. Gartman moved to Virginia in 1984, where he ran a futures brokerage operation for the Sovran Bank. Then in 1987, he began producing The Gartman Letter full-time. Dennis Gartman is a great success story.
The letter that is followed by many
As previously mentioned, Dennis Gartman started producing The Gartman Letter in 1987. It is still going strong today. Clients include mutual funds, hedge funds, banks, brokerage firms, and many different types of trading companies.
Gartman lectures around the world, and often appears on national television, talking about commodities, and other various markets. Amazingly enough, he also found the time to become an excellent golfer.
Gartman's rules of trading
You can learn a lot about a trader or investor, if they produce a personal rules of trading list. It will tell you something about their strategies, methods, and principles. Most importantly, it will tell you how a trader thinks. There is nothing more important than the psychological makeup of a trader or investor. Dennis Gartman came up with 22 rules of trading. I will pick out five of the better ones, and include my personal commentary as well.
Never under any circumstances add to a losing position. This is an excellent rule to always follow. Adding to a losing position is one of the biggest mistakes a trader can make. You should only add strategically to a winning position.
Trade like a mercenary guerrilla. I like this one. Always be on the winning side of a market. This means you should always trade with the trend. If the trend changes, you need to change also. Be on the winning side that has the upper hand.
Capital comes in two varieties. They are mental, and that which is in your pocket or account. This is true. It is critical to always cut your losses short. This will preserve not only your trading capital, but your psychological capital as well. If you are not in the proper mindset when trading, it is a recipe for disaster. Dennis Gartman understands this very well.
The objective is not to buy low and sell high, but to buy high and sell higher. In most trading circumstances, I totally agree. From when we are very young, our minds are wired to always look for the best deal, or the least expensive item. In the world of trading, this is generally not a good policy. You want to trade with the trend, and have the momentum on your side. As an example, buying stocks at an all-time high will get you much better results, than buying stocks at an all-time low. Most successful trading principles go against normal human nature. Dennis Gartman implements proper trading psychology. This is a major reason for his success.
Keep your technical systems simple. Complicated systems breed confusion, and simplicity breeds elegance. I like the wording, and I agree completely. There is no reason to look at dozens of indicators to make a trading decision. Price, or price movement should always be your number one factor. It is ok to have a couple secondary indicators for a little more confirmation, but don't make things more complicated than they need to be.
In summary
Dennis Gartman understands, and implements, what it takes to be successful in the world of trading. His strategies, methods, and principles have been proven successful for many decades. Most importantly, he has an excellent traders mindset. This allows him to be a winner. I highly recommend you study, and learn from this trading master.
