Learning to Win in the Stock Market

Protect your trading capital

The most important rule when trading stocks, or anything else, is to always cut your losses short. You are simply not going to be right on every trade you initiate. This is a hard lesson to learn, because it goes against human nature. If you don't keep every loss small, sooner or later, you will suffer some very large losses. Not only will they be devistating to your trading capital, but your psychological capital as well. A sound principle is to always sell a stock if it drops 10% below the purchase price. If you bought shares at 40 dollars, you would automatically sell them at 36 dollars, no matter what. Many elite traders will sell sooner. You can make a fortune in the stock market being right only half the time, but you must keep all losses small. This is a key element you must learn for stock market success.

Methods of analyzing a stock

Basically, there are two major ways to analyze a stock, fundamental analysis, and technical analysis. Traders have debated for a long time, the merits of each method. I have found the key is to properly incorporate both methods. This will help put the odds solidly in your favor. Successful trading is based on probabilities, and sound money management. You want to put as many factors as possible in your favor, before taking a position in the market.

Fundamental analysis

Fundamental analysis is about using real data, such as sales numbers, to evaluate a stock. This analysis is the foundation you need when acquiring a stock. It tells you about the quality of a stock. One of the most important factors is consistent earnings improvement. This is the fuel that can really affect the price of a stock. You want stocks with an annual earnings per share growth rate of 30% or more. Learning how to properly analyze a stock's fundamentals is crucial to winning in the stock market.

Technical analysis

Technical analysis is a method of evaluating securities by analyzing statistics generated by market activity. This includes price and volume. Basically, you are studying market movement, mostly with the use of charts. This allows you to check the supply and demand for a stock. I use daily charts for timing purposes, and weekly charts for a longer term perspective. A key part of technical analysis is learning to identify historically proven price patterns. This will dramatically improve your stock market results.

In conclusion

After you determine the general market is in an uptrend, the key to big profits is picking superior stocks. Choose stocks with strong earnings and sales growth. Look for stocks in leading industry groups. Make sure stocks have formed sound price patterns, and break through key resistance with heavy volume. Once you properly learn the stock market, you could make yourself a fortune.

Re: Do Women Play the Stock Market? Re: Do Women Play the Stock Market? - Thankfully, I do the finances in our household so there will be no surprises here! I cannot imagine not knowing what is going on. (In case you're wondering, my husband and I do consult with each other about major purchases though.) Until recently, I've only played a little in my RRSP's. I can't say I made any huge gains. I've done much better in real estate. My sister has done really well trading her RRSP's in penny stocks and if I remember correctly, she recently doubled her money in only a year. I'm hoping to change my own Stock Market record though! I got in on the ground level of a new green energy company in BC. It began as a private offering at 50 cents a share and now is offered at $1 a share only 3 months later. It's selling like hot cakes and will be closed to sales by the end of April (if there are any shares left). It was just evaluated by an independent company at around $6 a share. The company plans to be on the TSX this year and I expect to make a good return. Wish me well!
Re: How should i promote a new website? Re: How should i promote a new website? - ignore this message IF it's already been stated. I haven't had a chance to read all the replies and i have to jet from the office... I suggest marketing where ever your Target Market congregates. If it's a forum of concerned parents - go there. Strike up a deal with the forum owner (JV) and have him promote it to the list of members (Integration Marketing). If you want to go with Forums then i would partner with a parent who is a frequent poster/moderator on a particular Target Market Forum and have him/her add your link to their signature. That was just a thought but it's not as intense once you get buy in from the Forum owner or high ranked poster/moderator. Hope that sparks some new ideas.

Re: My Favourite 7 Boldest Entrepreneur Moves of All Time Re: My Favourite 7 Boldest Entrepreneur Moves of All Time - Hi Evan, I have a new suggestion for "Boldest Entrepreneur Moves of All Time" and a suggestion for your Learning from the Masters series: 1. Boldest Entrepreneur Moves of All Time = Christopher Columbus: "... he saw the possibility of treasure and commerce where others saw only danger. He committed so wholeheartedly to that vision that not even dozens of rejections and ongoing penury could dissuade him from pursuing a journey to Asia via the West. He built on his technical strengths as a seaman to plan a viable journey and eventually marshal an expedition." - Christopher Hoenig, 6 Essential Secrets for Thinking on a New Level I bought Hoenig's book about 10 years ago but couldn't make head or tail of it then... reading it now and finding it inspirational... 2. Nomination for Learning from the Masters video: Dee Hock, founder of VISA. (Source = Hoenig.)
