Entrepreneurs and Leadership-How Important Is It?

I am of the general opinion that leadership and it's value is overblown, when it comes to entrepreneurial activity, at least in the early stages. Certainly, leadership is a valued trait but there are other attributes I believe to be far more valuable than leadership to the entrepreneur.

The first and foremost requirement for a successful business start-up is Vision. The successful entrepreneur must, first have a vision of how his/her idea can serve the needs of others well enough for prospective customers to create a demand for the product or service.

The second requirement for entrepreneurial success is Attention to Detail. Even the most exciting vision must be accompanied with a plan to achieve it. Most plans from entrepreneurs are weak in strategy, and long on optimism. They almost always over estimate revenue and under estimate expenses which is a deadly cocktail.

The third requirement is Money. Possibly the most frequently occurring obstacle to entrepreneurial success is money or rather, the lack of enough of it. I cannot tell the you number of great ideas and business plans that have succumbed to "empty pockets." The best action step here is to line up your financing before you begin and expect some to "back away" from their earlier commitment.

Finally, the fourth need is a Passion for Success, an over-zealous commitment to succeed. Apart from God and Family, the success of your idea or business needs to be your focus all of the time. Never give up!

Only after these needs are met, does leadership come into play. It is the role of the leader to have followers and followers are easy to come by if you have a vision and a plan to achieve it. It is my belief that you cannot be a good leader without first being a good follower, so a good test for your leadership ability is; If others see me as I am, who and how many would follow? If the answer to that question is the right people and a lot of them. You are on your way.

Re: What works for you? Re: What works for you? - Hi Yinka, I work better under pressure of deadlines when I am doing something for other people. However, I like to have the leisure to develop my own projects. The first case is what Stephen Covey calls a "Quadrant 1" activity ("Important and urgent") whereas the second case is a "Quadrant 2" activity ("Important, not urgent"). We should aim to make as much time as possible for Q2 activities so that we can develop our own projects. Easier said than done!

CEOs and Email - Slaves? CEOs and Email - Slaves? - I wonder if the emails they are responding to are filtered thru their assistants first 'cos they seem to spend a lot of their off hours responding to them. True they are successful but I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay that price. I'd be interested to know what's the in the typical day planner of Entrepreneurs on the Forum. Entrepreneurs are a different breed than Paid Employees- so it would be interesting to view the contrast.

It just makes me even more thankful to be part of this forum! After helping create a new charity for animals in my local community last year, I created a vision for a charity empowering Women Entrepreneurs. It won't happen for a while yet, but I know it is something I will do within the next few years. As we allow ourselves to think bigger, the opportunity to impact people becomes much bigger as well. Does anyone else have a desire to really make a difference in the world through this means?
It’s enssential It’s enssential - Advertising is essential whether you advertise in big scale or small. Having a signage outside your store or office is already advertising. If you can't afford to advertise in newspapers or radio, you can try giving out flyers and brochures. Do email blasts. Have a blog or website. Send SMS or text messages to friends and relatives so they can pass it on to other friends. There are several ways in promoting and advertising your product without really spending so much. Important thing is, you should always let people know you exist. As the saying goes "A business with no sign is a sign of no business"
