Entrepreneurs and Success-Seven Qualities that Matter Most
The new-found interest in Entrepreneurship, as a result of the President's focus job creation through small business and Start-up America has organizations scurrying around in an attempt to define the ideal qualities of a successful Entrepreneur. Talking with and studying thousands of Entrepreneurs over a 30 year period has given me, I feel, a unique insight into the personal attributes that distance successful Entrepreneurs from others. Here are some of those observations. You may want to compare these traits with your perceived strengths if you are considering an Entrepreneurial venture.
Successful Entrepreneurs, I have observed, have:
- A Crystal Clear Picture of where they want to go - Successful Entrepreneurs, I have known, knew where they wanted to go and what would most likely get them there.
- A keen sense of Direction - They know where they are going and how they are likely to get there.
- A Passion for what they believe will get them there - For successful Entrepreneurs, there is no giving up, no quitting, and almost no rest until the objective is reached.
- An Affinity for Risk-Taking - Most successful Entrepreneurs, I know, do not seem to feel they have anything to lose, but everything to gain. So, they push the envelope all the time, every day.
- Knowledge that is not limited by themselves - Entrepreneurial success is usually beyond one person and requires input and contribution from others. As a result, they have powerful knowledge networks. They know people who know what they don't.
- The ability to Inspire others - Most business efforts require more than one person. Not everyone has the skill set of the leader but all can be inspired to be the best they can and Entrepreneurs I have known seem to be able to do that better than most.
- A perpetual Commitment to become better - I have never known a successful Entrepreneur that did not have an unusually strong commitment to getting better. Someone once said; If you are not getting better, on the inside, as fast as things are changing on the outside, the end of the race is in site and you are not the lead dog.
If you are considering a business start-up, it is critically important that you know your strengths and weaknesses. Become a master of Self-Awareness. Contact a professional to help you identify your level of competency in these six attributes. Learn to leverage the strengths and manage around the weaknesses. Some may even benefit from a short-term coaching relationship.
