How to Succeed in Business, Without Setting Your Hair On Fire

Most fail but some succeed! That is the story of business start-ups. Four out of five business start-ups fail in the first 5 years. But last night's panel on Entrepreneurs R Us identified some of the most common mistakes to avoid. Bill Fisher of Benefit Specialists, Walter Picket, Picket Plumbing and John Boyens of the Boyens Group shared their experiences with listeners on last night's show. Some of the thoughts were so powerful, I wanted to share them with you.

Regarding the most significant challenges they faced in getting their successful businesses up and running, long enough to be considered successful (28,27 and 18 yrears), they shared the most important challenges they faced in the early going.Here are are a few challenges they faced and overcame:

When asked what advice they would offer someone starting a business today, they suggested four things were essential:

  1. Paying attention and being alert to what is happening in the marketplace
  2. Having and developing the skill to be the best at what you do
  3. Having a Passion for the work
  4. Being a person of Integrity-doing what you say you are going to do

A good book I'm reading now is "Maximum Achievement: Strategies and Skills That Will Unlock Your Hidden Powers to Succeed" by Brian Tracy as it was a birthday gift from a friend. Tracy's book is helpful in identifying what's important in your life and then setting an action plan to achieve it.
