5 reasons why companies should encourage employees to blog

Typically, an employee interacts only with a small group in the organization- his team, managers and subordinates and discussion will be mainly related to work. Providing a blogging platform within the corporate intranet and encouraging the staff to blog gives an employer following unique advantages which otherwise are difficult to derive:

1 A platform to display his creative writing abilities-
Ability to write well is a talent-but most of the jobs today may not have anything to do with creative writing. Blogging gives employees to explore their command over words-showcase their ability to write good articles, poem, stories and more.

2 Encouraging employee to open up
An employee usually doesn't share personal details with his management or other employees, excluding may be few close friends. Blogging encourages people to share their joy and sorrow, what they did where they went, what they think and what they feel. This helps managers and HR to understand their people better.

3 Facilitate interactions within employees
Employees across the organization, irrespective of their departments/projects/seniority can come together under the umbrella of corporate blog and interact effectively to discuss subjects of common interest

4 Allow managers to take preventive measures towards employee grievances
If any employee is not happy about anything in the company (company policy, pay, his colleagues/project etc) and writes about it in the blog, management can take note of that and initiate preventive measures to ensure employee satisfaction is not compromised. Without an effective platform to air his grievances, an employee may sometime look for opportunities outside the organization, without even making an effort to resolve his concerns with his employers. Blogging can bring down attrition, if used effectively.

5 Explore hidden talents
A programmer who is assigned the task of coding might be very good at pre sales or business analysis, someone working on JAVA may also have strong expertise in another technology such as .net or SAP. When an employee displays is interest and expertise in a specific field which may be different from what he is working currently, management can make note of such talents and use them effectively when there is a need.

Because of these and many more advantages, several corporate houses have launched internal blogs for their employees. Most of the leading IT companies in India have internal blogs and non IT companies are also recognizing the need for such a platform in their enterprise. The list of companies jumping to corporate blogging bandwagon is on a steady rise. In future articles, let us review other aspects of corporate blogging-such as measuring ROI from blogging

Re: Good Day from Arizona Re: Good Day from Arizona - Welcome to the forum. I have a software product that allows companies to track their employees training requirements and history. It's a desktop application rather than web based, as I feel most companies don't want to store their employee data off site. Anway, I'd be interested in seeing a link to your site. Is it ready yet, if so them send me a message with the link. Maybe we can help each other out with ideas or suggestions.
Re: Message to Mods, and request for feedback, two ideas Re: Message to Mods, and request for feedback, two ideas - Hey GT, I got your email about this. I think as moderators we have a responsibility here to encourage the growth of the Forum and to equally do our part to encourage all members as well as moderate posts. I like the ideas you and Evan came up with as this may encourage members to come back regularly. As far as mod suggestions, I think Mal would be a good candidate. Cheers, Alan
Re: Invoicing Re: Invoicing - [quote="bennyboy7":243h82ue]Hi All I was reading an interesting article when I was in my bank the other day. It said that more and more companies are now charging interest on invoices that are paid late. Does anyone use this method? I think it could damage your relationship and decrease anymore work with the client? What do you think? Its a tough choice...[/quote:243h82ue] That's always been a common practice in businesses I managed and companies I dealt with. Utility companies and many other businesses do it all the time. There can be some exceptions, but its a good practice to have in place. It is a definite way to encourage people to pay on time. If there is a good reason not to pay a bill on time, then the fees can be waived. You can also take a page from the credit card companies and charge interest and a past due charge for delinquent accounts. Shri
Starting a New Business Starting a New Business - Congratulations on the first step of deciding to create your own business. First, you have to ascertain if you are going to be selling your products or services to people or to businesses. People purchase products and services for three basic reasons: •To satisfy basic needs •To solve problems •To make themselves feel good. You have to determine which of these three categories your product or service is the solution to. Businesses, unlike individuals, buy products and services for three reasons as well: •To increase revenues •To maintain the status quo •To decrease expenses. Knowing the reasons why people/businesses buy, you should have a picture emerging of who you think your "Target Market" (or ideal customer) is. Once you have zeroed in on your solution, you are ready to create your Marketing Strategy. If you look at any company that has grown rapidly over the past few years, (i.e. WestJet and Starbucks), it should demonstrate to you the importance of Marketing. In simple terms these companies have: •Clearly defined what makes them different; •Who their ideal customer is; •How to reach them; •Why customers should buy from them; •And most importantly why customers should come back again. It is strong Marketing Awareness that singles out the best companies. I can not stress enough how important it is to create a "living" Marketing Plan before you even start. I hope this helps a little in the creation of your plan. All the very best of luck. Remember: "A Goal without a Plan is just a Wish" Miles of Smiles, Marketing Maven
Re: Blogging For Promotion Re: Blogging For Promotion - A blog really describes a platform and not a marketing strategy, and blogs can take many forms and have many different purposes. For example, you could use a blog platform just to post your companies press releases, or you could use a blog platform to make a news website. I use a blogging platform, but don't see my sites as blogs, but more as online magazines.
