Why live blog an event?

Those familiar with traditional journalism would know the significance of reporting the news at the earliest. Journalists all over strive to deliver latest news into your TV room, as soon as they occur, braving all odds in the process. An event such as a conference aren't covered live by any news channels- at the most it would fetch a few seconds of airtime with a brief mention. Similarly, newspapers would only publish a summarized report of the event, given the real estate on the paper.

What this means is that day long discussions that happen in a conference are often forgotten by end of the day, due to lack of proper documentation. Event live blogging can change all that, by providing a mechanism and platform to record the excerpts from talks given by experts and quickly share them with the outside world in full details. Live bloggers job involves attentively listen to the speaker, note down the key points, facts and excerpts from his talk, compile them into a post and quickly publish in the event blog.

Those who couldn't attend the event in person can benefit by knowing the summary of each talk/session, just by staying tuned to the blog.

With blogging positioning itself as an unofficial alternative to journalism, live blogging can add significant value to any event, even more than what traditional reporting could offer.

In brief, live blogging an event would bring following value additions to stake holders:

1. Traditional media may not be able to cover an event live and delivers event news to public after a delay of few hours to a day. Live blogging, on the other hand can bring in instant updates and happenings of the event, both for the people attending the event as well as to those who are not able to.

2. Live blogging effectively documents the keynotes shared by the speaker. A journalist composing his report at the end of the day will have much less to recall vis-à-vis a blogger who blogs soon after the speaker finishes speaking.

3. Conventional media only gives a high level reporting of the event (due to time and space constraints) while bloggers can report each activity in detail and let readers chose what they want to read.

4. Live blogging, coupled with live twittering, can bring in interactivity with participants who may not be physically present at the venue. This is something impossible in mainstream journalism.

5. Podcasting (video interviews with speakers) and live photo sharing can make it exciting both for the speaker and public. These updates can also be pushed to facebook and other social networking sites and the reach will be in thousands.

6. Good no of quality blog posts contribute to strong search engine positioning, boosts traffic to the website and can help monetizing as well

Thus, the online event management, by means of live blogging, tweeting and podcasting can add a new dimension to an event. At fraction of the cost (compared to print or tv ads) effective use of social media can help reach larger audience and make the most of an event. A well planned pre and post event online campaign can ensure that the efforts spent in conducting an event are leveraged to the maximum.

Re: How did we Live before Electricity Re: How did we Live before Electricity - Interesting topic everyone. The first thing that comes to mind and may answer some of your questions is this: look at how the Amish live. Now, you may not be familiar with the Amish where you live, but here in PA, I'm surrounded by them. Lancaster, PA is the heart of Amish, really. But, just over the ridge and mountain from where I live, the Amish are everywhere as well. They live without electricity everyday. It's forbidden for them to have it in their homes. They live a much more uncleanly life compared to the rest of us, but they get by and do very well for themselves. There are a lot of traits they have that many do not. Their work habit is the best I've ever seen. You can actually learn a lot from them, including how to get by without electricity... LOL. I like the idea of solar electricity. I think that's a technology we're going to be seeing more and more of.

Re: Is linked content permitted or even ethical? Re: Is linked content permitted or even ethical? - Most of the time it's okay as long as you include at least one live link back to the original site/page. And as GT said make sure you check to see if the site has any specific guidelines first. Also remember... Articles and videos are usually created to be spread on other sites as long as they owner gets due credit for it (live link). However, blog posts and actual site content are usually not meant to be used by other people.
