Productivity and Power, Freedom, and Peace of Mind

Guest post by: Eberhard Schmidt

Article Overview: You might ask what Power, Freedom, and Peace of Mind have to do with productivity; and that is a good question. We usually do not relate Power, Freedom, and Peace of Mind to productivity. We might assume that Power, Freedom, and Peace of Mind could be the result of being very productive. Having done Mission Control and being trained as a Mission Control coach I am going to elaborate in the following article on the connection between the above state of mind and productivity.

Productivity and Power, Freedom, and Peace of Mind

You might ask what Power, Freedom, and Peace of Mind have to do with productivity; and that is a good question. We usually do not relate Power, Freedom, and Peace of Mind to productivity. We might assume that Power, Freedom, and Peace of Mind could be the result of being very productive. Having done Mission Control© and being trained as a Mission Control© coach I am going to elaborate in the following article on the connection between the above state of mind and productivity.

Working in the 21st Century is tougher. We're deluged with information, troubled by impossible deadlines, and overwhelmed by high-spiraling expectations. No matter how well organized we are, we simply can't get it all done. The 20th Century techniques for personal productivity - approaches that were developed more than 30 years ago - are simply insufficient for the demands of today's work environment.

Will being organized and efficient provide the dramatic increases in productivity that we are looking for? If you look at the number of electronic organizers that are in use you might draw the conclusion that most of us must be very well organized. If you were to look at some of the more recent statistics quite a few of us are overworked and feel overwhelmed. "For those with too much to do, the Overwork in America study found that the very skills that are fundamental to succeeding in this global economy-specifically, moving quickly from task to task with little time for recovery in between, facing many interruptions, and working outside normal work hours, including vacations-can be useful but also can become detrimental. For a significant group of Americans, the way we work today appears to be negatively affecting their health and effectiveness at work."

So what is it that is giving me the productivity I am looking for? The problem is that most people think that their productivity depends on their level of organization or efficiency. You make task lists and work plans, trying to "work smarter". You work harder, faster and longer hours in order stay ahead of your work. But being organized and efficient will only give you small, incremental gains in your productivity.

Your productivity is limited only by your work habits. Most people think that their level of productivity is limited by the number of hours they can work, how much they get done, or how organized they are. It's not. Your level of productivity is only limited by your work habits.

Altering your work habits unleashes your productivity. You have habitual ways of thinking about and dealing with your work - familiar and unexamined approaches to work that you have repeated, over time, until they became habits. Just think about this: most of us have been raised in a time when there was no email, no cell phone and no organizer. So we developed our work habits in an environment that had little to do with today's work place demands. Is it a miracle that our work habits do not correlate with the speed of today's world? Because they are unconscious and firmly established, those work habits actually impact how you perceive your own productivity. Altering your work habits will provide a dramatic increase in your productivity - far beyond what you currently see possible.
The assumption and experience is that if you are in a state of Power, Freedom, and Peace of MindTM you will automatically be more productive and more creative. In that state making use of the above mentioned tools, and being organized and efficient is a natural outcome that will support your productivity - but the main leap will have come through a change in your work habits that will lead to the experience of Power, Freedom, and Peace of MindTM.

It is a little bit like the eternal chicken and egg question. The way to cut through this dilemma is your determination to make a difference. There are many proven programs out there that have helped people make that break through. Mission Control© is one of them. Whichever program you decide to embark on, stick to it until you are sure you have given it all of your focus and dedication - and then look at the impact it is having on your productivity and go from there.

As a conductor of your own enterprise, you can not see yourself as a one-woman-show. You must choose to utilize the power people in your life, by asking for help when you need it, and effectively delegating in order to capitalize on your strengths and that of your power network. When certain experts are not represented in your power network, you must actively seek advisors or mentors and develop a team of specialists, so the benefits are received by everyone involved in the power network - the true Power of Power Networks.
