Lessons from the Top of the World

Guest post by: Jim Stovall

Article Overview: Recently, I have been reading quite a bit about expeditions on Mount Everest. I am intrigued by the fact that so many people over the years have been driven to climb the tallest mountain on earth and stand on the top of the world. While studying the expeditions, I have been amazed at how much time, preparation, and energy goes into getting to the mountain with all of the equipment necessary to make the climb and to set up each of the base camps along the route. An expedition is literally years in the planning stage and months in the preparation stage before an attempt can be made on the summit.

Lessons from the Top of the World

Recently, I have been reading quite a bit about expeditions on Mount Everest.

Then, if the weather is good, the conditions are right, and there are no major accidents, a handful of members from the expedition will have a chance to make it to the top. Out of dozens of climbers who begin the journey, only a few will even have the opportunity on the last day to stand on the top of the world.

On many expeditions, through no fault of their own, all of the climbers return home without even a glimpse of the summit. But at best, people plan for years and work for months to stand for a few moments at the pinnacle.

Our lives and our successes are much the same. No matter what your goal or objective may be, you will spend much more time in its pursuit than you will enjoying your success. For this reason, we must enjoy the journey.

If we examine the way we live our lives, we invest our days pursuing milestones along the route to our personal summit. The milestones we reach are not really a part of our daily life. They are simply points along the way where we measure our progress. Our life is lived in the journey and in the climb toward the top. It is ultimately sad to see individuals pursuing a goal they think they want while they are enduring the personal torture of the pursuit.

If you don't enjoy the journey, there is no destination worth the effort. If you enjoy every step along the way, you will find your moment on the top of the world to be a time of reflection on the wonderful experience you had getting there.

Invest your days in pursuit of a worthwhile summit, but enjoy each day of the climb.

Today's the day!

Who Said Twitter Doesn't Work...? Who Said Twitter Doesn't Work...? - Last month, the BBC World Service programme, The Strand, featured 21 year-old Icelandic pianist/composer Olafur Arnalds. Arnalds achieved extraordinary success through his internet-led project to compose 7 tunes in 7 days, post them on his website and then post links to it via TWITTER. As a result his website got thousands of visitors eager to listen to his music, catapulting him to fame and bringing his music to the attention of the BBC, who featured an interview with him on the World Service programme, The Strand! So who says Twitter doesn't work? (HINT: It does help if you have something uniquely your own that other people want to get hold of...)
Napoleon on Project Management Napoleon on Project Management - Why do I include this in a list of books aimed at female entrepreneurs? Well...in the expectation that there are as many female history buffs as male ones, and in the belief that anyone interested in history will find this book fascinating, while those interested in project management will learn a thing or two. I think this was the first "gimmick" book - an author using a historical figure (usually a male, military figure, it must be admitted) to talk about modern day business management. I refuse to read any of the kind that advocates - even obliquely - the techniques of the Sopranos or the Mossad - but these military ones are pretty fun. Anyway: Only in the understanding of history, Napoleon might say, do we gain an understanding of strategy in the present. In the same spirit, Napoleon on Project Management offers the recipe for successfully managing your commitments using the strategies, tactics and priorities that propelled Napoleon himself to victory. Re: Exotic Tea Shop Website for Review Re: Exotic Tea Shop Website for Review - Hi David, - Background is nice and fitting, but I don't like the header. The title completely blends in with the background? - About Us shouldn't be second from the left on the navigation bar. People read from left to right. The commercial intent is to buy, the online store should probably be second. - Online Tea Store... too many choices without supplementary information. No description of product choice. oz and pricing should be stylized separately from the name of the product. - Online Tea Store.... Visuals is definitely very important in raising commercial intent. Someone who comes to the site through SEO is searching for exotic teas and not particulars. Meaning they're browsing. Text is not enough for a browsing shopper. - World of Tea... the information can be organized a bit better. Again, visuals. Some of this info belongs to online tea store. I'm not too sure on the name. - Tea & Treasure... not sure on this name either... mainly because you have "World of Tea" next to it. Navigation should be transparent in conveying information to the users. Why not call it "Find Us" or "Visit Us"? - Email newseletter.... "occasional updates" containing what exactly? Again, my humble opinion. Hope you find it useful!
