Article Overview: Recently, I was shocked to hear the news that my friend and colleague Brian Klemmer had suddenly passed away. Brian had been a happy, healthy, 61-year-old with what seemed to be a limitless future, so his death hit me very hard. When we lose someone special to us, our immediate thoughts go to the time we spent together and what that individual meant in our own lives. Brian was certainly a significant person to me in this way; but with an individual like Brian Klemmer, one must also consider the global loss to people around the world.

The Compassionate Samurai
Recently, I was shocked to hear the news that my friend and colleague Brian Klemmer had suddenly passed away.
Brian had many accomplishments, but I believe he will be best known for his teaching and writing surrounding his concept of The Compassionate Samurai. Brian believed that there are two kinds of people in the world. There are compassionate individuals who want to do good things and make a difference for people around them. Then there are the powerful people who can have, do, or impact anything they want. There's nothing innately good or bad about being either type of person, but when you can combine the two in a group or, better yet bring the elements together in one person, you can change the world.
We all know good people who desire to make a difference but don't have the resources or the power to initiate change. We all also know people who are powerful and have tremendous resources but may not direct them in appropriate ways. Brian Klemmer will be remembered for combining these two fundamental elements of humanity.
Three times a year, people came from all around the world to a West Coast resort to learn from Brian Klemmer how to be a Compassionate Samurai. For over a decade, I joined Brian onstage and spoke at all of these events. Those who attended ran the gambit from ordinary people with a desire to make a difference in the world to the rich and famous who desire to go from success to significance.
Brian may be gone, but he is not forgotten. All of his work around the world, including the Compassionate Samurai events, will continue taking place and will continue to grow.
I believe teachers are among the most influential people in the world as they plant seeds in the lives of future generations. The only thing more impactful than a teacher is a person like my late, great friend Brian Klemmer who teaches the teachers how to make a difference.
You've heard it said that if you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day; but if you teach him to fish, you feed him for life. Brian Klemmer took it one step further by demonstrating to the world: If you can teach people how to teach others to fish, no one need ever be hungry again.
As you go through your day today, be thankful for the giants like Brian Klemmer who have gone before us to show us the way.
Today's the day!
