The Wealth of Work

Article Overview: Work is among the most misunderstood activities in our society today. Too often, people try to avoid work in every way imaginable, and they look forward to weekends, days off, sick days, vacation, and--most significantly--retirement. The Wealth of Work
Work is among the most misunderstood activities in our society today. Too often, people try to avoid work in every way imaginable, and they look forward to weekends, days off, sick days, vacation, and--most significantly--retirement. Many lottery players daydream of walking into their boss’s office holding the winning lottery ticket and telling their boss, “I quit!” or any number of other phrases not suitable for publication in this column.
I certainly enjoy days off, vacations, and holidays. But this is not because I do not love my work. It is because spending time away from my life’s work allows me to regenerate and renew my commitment and perspective.
It is interesting to note that among men and women in penitentiaries, that work is viewed as a privilege which is granted for good behavior. The worst punishment involves solitary confinement in which work duties and outside contact are eliminated. Prisoners, which make up some of the most dysfunctional people in our society, have obviously discovered something that many of us have not yet mastered: Prisoners understand that work is a privilege. Work allows us to focus our life’s energy and our talents into one area for which we receive rewards, recognition, and satisfaction.
I realize there are many people who do not enjoy their job. With a few exceptions, from a minority of people who read my columns in specific parts of the world, most all of us live in a free society. I grow tired of people speaking as if they are victimized by their job and their employer. They applied for the job, asked for the job, and continue to stay there month after month and year after year. No one is holding a gun to their head. They can quit their job any moment of any day and seek another.
If you find yourself among those who do not enjoy their jobs, start the process of making your life’s work a joy and a privilege.
1. Make a list of the things and activities you enjoy in your life.
2. Consider jobs, careers, and employers that offer the things you enjoy.
3. Consider interning or shadowing someone for a few weeks.
4. Begin the lifelong process of continuing education so you can qualify and stay qualified for your dream career.
As you go through your day today, realize that you spend more time on your job than you do with your family. Make sure your career is a treasure in your life, not just the means to an end.
Today’s the day!
