Article Overview: As a blind person myself, I am always intrigued with the way that sighted people get or fail to get from point A to point B. It is fascinating to me that people who can see perfectly spend a great deal of their time being lost. Recently, I made one of my rare trips to a giant shopping mall. As usual, I was listening to all the conversations going on around me. I discovered that most people spend a great deal of effort during their shopping experience trying to figure out where they are in relation to where they wish they were.

As a blind person myself, I am always intrigued with the way that sighted people get or fail to get from point A to point B.

I discovered that throughout the mall, there are a number of maps showing the locations of the various shops and restaurants in the building. These maps are identical at every location throughout the facility with one very critical exception. In each map location, there is one unique piece of information - that is the large arrow pointing to a spot on the map with the explanation reading, "You are here."

This points out a vital link in the chain of personal achievement. That is, quite simply, that the single most vital piece of information necessary in order to get where you are going is to know where you are. There are millions of people who want to have a certain bank balance, weigh a certain amount, or achieve any other business or personal goal. These people fantasize about where they want to be, but they have not taken the practical step of determining where they are.

A dream turns into a goal when you get specific. The ancient Chinese proverb says, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." This is only true if you take that first step in the right direction. That is only possible when you know where you are.

Think about all the things you want in the personal and professional areas of your life. Then take account of where you are today. You may find that you're closer than you think. But, in any event, you will have taken the first step in the right direction, and you will have reduced an ethereal dream into a practical goal that can begin now.

Today's the day!
