Is your business strategy working? We are two months into 2011 - now is the right time to ask your managers to prepare for your quarterly business review. Dusting off the strategic plan in December may help you understand why you didn't hit your annual performance targets but does nothing to encourage proactive adjustments throughout the year to increase the potential for success.
If you've followed my advice in the past, your strategic plan contains a clear direction for the organization, business objectives, performance targets (goals) and a few key initiatives that will set the stage for performance improvement. In addition, your strategic plan should have been concisely communicated to your managers so that they aligned their efforts (and their team's) accordingly.
Keep it simple - your business review meeting should be designed to answer four major questions:
- Are you hitting your performance targets (goals)? This should be assessed at the company and department level. Each manager should have a firm grasp on the performance of their team and team members as well.
- What progress has been made on the key performance improvement initiatives? Are you ahead or behind, and what is the impact (so far) on your company goals?
- What adjustments need to be made to address performance issues or enhance your current situation? Look at your processes, systems and customer feedback, and listen to your employees for important cultural implications.
- What obstacles do you see on the horizon and what are the potential solutions? Anticipating problems is a great defensive measure.
