Leaders Need to Lead – Now is the Time
There is an interesting mix of business news in the media - good and bad, however regardless of what you hear, your business reality is derived from the performance of your sales force, your profit and loss statement, employee morale, and messaging from your company’s leadership. Despite how long it takes to emerge from this perfect storm of economic issues it is my firm belief that it will be the focused and resolute effort of your company leaders who will make the unique difference.
I am in a fortunate position - I speak with many business leaders weekly from companies in various industries and learn first hand what is working and what is not. Here are a few examples of what I am hearing and seeing. In the “what is not working” category: A shotgun sales approach – it is better to deploy your salespeople in a deliberate fashion. Working your employees ever harder – it is better to work with your employees and teams to eliminate business deficiencies so that they can deliver greater value to your organization. And, setting unrealistic performance expectations – yes, raise the bar, but not out of reach. Evaluate the landscape, set realistic stretch goals, celebrate successes, and watch your company grow. It may grow slowly but that is better than the alternative.
In the “what is working” category (in addition to the suggestions above): I see company leaders not panicking, taking a breath, assessing talent, and charting a course to success (or in some cases, safety). It is fair to say that most employees today are concerned about their future, both professionally and financially, and they are looking for guidance. This comes from leaders at all levels in the organization to calm the fear and set a realistic expectation for the future. Sure, there are no guarantees but a focused workforce is essential in a time of uncertainty. It minimizes the rumor mill, enhances team performance, and increases productivity.
