Ships without Rudders Eventually Hit the Rocks
As I typical do at this time of year, it is time to talk about direction and strategy. What are your plans for 2010??
The "ship" analogy will resonate with most of you reading this newsletter but only a small percentage will recognize how deeply it impacts your organization and what to do to fix it. Compounding the challenge, too many leaders don't recognize anything is broken - so why fix it? The underlying disconnects do not reveal themselves easily and, often, until it is too late.
For your company to run efficiently and productively you need....... direction, capable leaders, engaged employees, effective processes and systems, and products and/or services that deliver value. Navigating your company through turbulent times can be exponentially more challenging if you don't have a solid "rudder". In other words, you need a strategic direction that is...
- well documented
- shared will all the leaders
- shared by leaders with employees to create alignment
- tied to key measurements, success indicators, and improvement initiatives
- reviewed during the year at regular intervals for possible course corrections
8-Step Strategic Planning Approach: A simple way to keep your business on track is to follow these steps... and remember this does not need to be a week long boot-camp event. If you are disciplined, you can develop a successful plan in a single day.
Step One: Invite the right people and make a commitment to the process
Step Two: Define your company's purpose - a mission statement is a good start
Step Three: Assess your current situation - a SWOT analysis is a good tool
Step Four: Look into the future - make assumptions that will impact your future success
Step Five: Define your competitive advantage and strategic direction
Step Six: Decide how you will measure success - key performance indicators
Step Seven: Determine key performance improvement initiatives
Step Eight: Assign responsibility, take action, and assess progress
Whether you do it yourself or ask for help (if you are not sure if you need help - feel free to give me a call for guidance), start the process now. The outcome does not need to be perfect. It needs to be meaningful, provide direction, and inspire confidence.
