Crazy People Buy Stuff Too!
If you happen to be crazy and you are reading this, my apologies. The truth is, we all have had moments when we feel like we’ve completely lost it. The words “I feel like I’m going crazy” have come out of more mouths than we can imagine. I looked up the definition of the word “crazy” in the dictionary: full of cracks or flaws, being out of the ordinary, mad or insane. The word insane seemed to ring a bell with me when I thought back to an incident this past winter.
As I just started a coaching call at 7:00 pm, my 5-year-old twins decided to pour green finger paint all over each other, on the family room carpet, their toys and the near by walls. I stood there in shock as they chased each other down the hallway leaving a trail of green paint. The next hour was just a blur. I truly felt at that moment that I was going crazy.
My wife was out at the time and told me later that I called her during the middle of this chaos (which I don’t remember) and I told her she needed to get home immediately. Of course there were a few expletives thrown in that I purposely left out of this article. I just remember telling myself “stay logical and breathe.”
In my sales and goal setting seminars, I teach people that it is very difficult and almost impossible to be logical and emotional at the same time. The human brain just doesn’t work that way.
As frustrating as the “green paint EVERYWHERE” experience was, there are certainly more serious situations that can cause a temporary lapse of sanity for a person. Imagine coming home from a weekend away to find out your sump pump stopped working during a storm and your basement has three feet of water in it. Or your heat stopped working, the pipes froze and then burst leaving every room of your house dripping wet.
As a sales person, if your first reaction to all this is seeing dollar signs, I’d suggest you begin to re-think your purpose for being in sales in the first place. As I’ve talked about countless times, having another person’s best interest in mind and truly caring about helping them will lead to a long and prosperous sales career. Chasing money will not!
In situations where a person can be forced into being “crazy,” it is up to you as a sales person to be more of a consultant. Be the person that finds solutions. Being calm and logical is the best way to be of help to this person. If the person is irrational and deflects some of their anger or bad feelings toward you, just listen and take it. Some times you have to take one for the team.
In the end, the person will really appreciate you for it. Oh and by the way, not only will they use your services, but they’ll tell everyone what a great experience they had with you during this “crazy situation.”
