Article Overview: 6 Tools for Team Leaders, Team Coaches and People Builders Are things changing in your company? If so, then I know right now many of your team members are wrapped up in fear... worried about their jobs, their family members, and the economy. Fear happens when we feel out of control. We may have been cajoled to ride the roller coaster at the fair by our teasing children, but when we stepped on, we knew the fear would only be temporary. We knew eventually there would be an end to that ride. Today there are a lot of people secretly screaming "I wanna get off". Can you hear them? Maybe it's not actually words. Are you seeing it in more sick days taken, less productivity, more conflict with opposite personalities, and even a deafening silent stare?

Fear happens when we feel out of control. We may have been cajoled to ride the roller coaster at the fair by our teasing children, but when we stepped on, we knew the fear would only be temporary. We knew eventually there would be an end to that ride.
Today there are a lot of people secretly screaming "I wanna get off".
Can you hear them? Maybe it's not actually words. Are you seeing it in more sick days taken, less productivity, more conflict with opposite personalities, and even a deafening silent stare?
What are we doing to help them? Here are a few of ideas....
1. Hold a meeting and have everyone write down (privately on their own paper) what they fear. Then have them write down what would be the worst case scenario IF that situation WAS to happen. Would they be able to find other jobs? OF COURSE! Would their life continue? OF COURSE! Now have them tear and burn those private papers. Next...
2. Create a reading list. Why not ask at one of your employee meetings what people are reading that would benefit the group. Delegate a chapter to be read then shared at the next meeting. Ask "how can this help us in the workplace and at home?" Call or email if you'd like a suggested reading list.
3. Create a humor shelf in your "corporate library" (you DO have one right?) Make those funny books appear everywhere. Leave them in the break room. Put comics on bulletin boards. This may be the perfect time to create a designated Humor Committee that will work on finding something to laugh at everyday (even if your committee is only 1 person).
3. Hire some "hands on" help. By that I mean - invest in a massage therapist to come into your office and give neck and shoulder massages to staff members once a month. You will be amazed at the return on that investment of time and money.
4. Remind everyone the importance of healthy eating in stressful times. Make sure there is plenty of water and fruit around for the taking. Bring in a local nutritionist to educate team members about how to avoid stress, and its effects. Talk about ways to add little bits of exercise to their days. Help them understand cells are rejuvenated with proper rest.
5. Create a walking group in the office. Convince others that a few minutes outside to see the world is still rolling along will certainly help balance a bad or tedious day.
6. And don't forget...This is NOT the time to cut training dollars...your team needs to hear from other business experts on real strategies to stay focused.
