What's Behind Your Walls?

This weekend I drove to my son's house and we decided to "remodel" my grandson's room for his upcoming "tween" birthday. He'll be 12. We worked for 15 hours straight pulling up carpet, tearing down paneling, plaster, lathe, and putting up insulation and sheetrock. We didn't finish but Jorden was excited to see the room will be quite a bit different.
Thank goodness he has patience and vision. Do you? As I was driving home I thought about how many businesses need to do the same thing.
They're working in a "stinky" environment that needs to be changed from the foundation up. Have you looked at your organizations' foundation lately? Are there people there that you've been thinking for years, needs to be removed from the building? Have you tolerated them because of their esthetic value? If so - in these tough economic times - maybe it's time to clean house and re-build!
And what about your team players that represent the walls of your organization? What's behind the work they produce? Is it ethical and solid or do you see cracks? Training on ethics, communication skills, and leadership can repair those cracks and crevices before it turns into a crisis situation that could lead to an entire collapse.
Lately we've seen how the internal deterioration of a business can affect both local and national economies. Don't ignore the situation - the price is too high.
So what can you do? Stop and evaluate. Listen and communicate. Observe and investigate. Get tools! Talk to other business experts and ask smart questions on what they're doing to help guarantee they're building on a solid foundation. Do an anonymous ethics questionnaire to find out what's really going on with your team and how they work. Take a hard look at removing your "termites" in your organization. Those people who grumble, do little work that benefits your organization, and are eating away at the business that you worked hard and with dedication to build. Always keep your eyes and ears open for new team members. I've found my best people unhappily working for others who don't allow them to grow, advance, and strive. Create an environment where no one is afraid to "get their hands dirty" to build a stellar place to work. And don't forget to have patience and vision!
