Always Have a Foolproof One Liner
It is essential, regardless of what business you are in to have a one liner.
Whether you are at a gala event, or Speed Networking, if you have a saying or phrase that works well, you will be successful.
Coming up with this one liner may take some creative thinking on your part. Do not waste live prospects by trying this out on
them. Your "one liner" should be thought of over time, written on paper, and practised to see how it rolls off of your tongue.
"Lon, I am a poet, what would I possibly use as a one liner?" How about "Hi, I'm a poet, what is your favorite poem?"
Some Pointers:
Don't use open ended questions, unless by design.
Never lose control of the conversation, but be a good listener.
Be specific when networking, and set a time to get back to that person within 24 hours after meeting them.
Carry pen and paper as back up, in addition to your mobile phone.
A one liner is not even an elevator speech, or 5 min presentation, but a skill that if you master, you can gain many followers, build a network of professionals and never run out of prospects. If you phrase your one liner correctly, and work at this, and study and research your market, you can turn whatever you do into a universal commodity.
This is what I use: "Do you tweet?"
In this case, I have an open ended question, normally a big no no. But I am skilled in knowing when to cut off the person before they give me a diatribe about why they don't. Very quickly, after the "No, I don't" I jump in with, "Let me show you how" ....
So it sort of rolls off my tongue effortlessly, "Do you tweet?.... Let me show you how." 8 syllables, 8 short words, that have a universal appeal.
I may go on to explain that I have a larger following than any other private individual in DC, or that I manage professional and small business Twitter accounts, and I'd like to get them started for free. But I am enlarging my network, doing a good deed and planting seeds all at the same time.
