Press Release: Time Tested Method for Being Recognized
The Free Press Release and Getting Your Message Out
Free? You mean Press Releases cost money? Sure they do. If you go online, you will surely see, that:
A. The pricing is like everything else, from $49 to $500 for these services.
B. These companies all promise to deliver your message
C. You get what you pay for
Personal experience: I had a company that I did some business with, and the owner assured me that his Press Release Software was the best, that he'd get some reporters to the location on the day of the big, planned event. I was not in charge of the Press Release, I had to mind the store. It eMailed NewsRoom Editors so they could pass the information to the news crews who would determine it's relevance or usefulness. It also FAX'd the information as well. So it was redundant, sophisticated, and would do the trick.
Well, the software didn't work, all the fax numbers were obsolete, the eMail's all bounced back, and the local news crews had to be called personally by me at the last minute. They didn't have time to get make up and hair ready, or they said they had other more important issues at such a last minute thing. There was a Japanese News Crew that happened by, they were taking shots of the Whitehouse, and they stumbled on our Big Event by accident!
So my experience tells me: A. Pricing Means Nothing. B. These Press Release Companies don't always deliver what they promise. C. Sometimes you gotta pay a pro to make sure the news get's out!!
There is one added benefit to cross marketing over a wide range of media. Let's say you've connected, you've advertised, you've eMailed. You've done what you're supposed to do. By regularly contacting the local media, they begin to realize you are a "Specialist" in your field. Whether you realize it or not, the Journalists are putting you in their Rolodex, Outlook, bookmarking your site. When the topic comes up, they need "Resources".
Use Hollywood's example. The relationship between journalist and news source is absolutely VITAL TO WHAT JOURNALISTS DO! Having "Go To" resources is how they make thier living. Journalists love to and need to develop sources. If you are persistant with the Press Release, amongst other media, then you will have journalists eventually call you. Then you'll see some hits. "We are here with Sally and George McWilliams, of McWilliams Five and Dime. Tell us what you think about the new downtown tax during the recession...." There's no better coverage in the world than TV Coverage. Buy a TIVO, save the clip, and format it to UTube.
