Sports Psychology
When the chips are down, the athlete often cannot share his/her inner fears, anxiety and anger issues with the coach or their parents. Now the athlete has a new ally...the professional Sports Psychologist (also referred as the professional Sport Psychologist).
The Sports Psychologist, who should be certified and well-trained in examining the whole person, can provide the athlete with skills that can really develop an elite athlete from a good athlete. Coaches and trainers focus almost exclusively on left brain activates, including game plans, strategy, technique, speed, agility, muscle building, etc. Most athletes focus exclusively on training using the left brain. Accordingly, athletes are cheated because their right brains are being ignored.
Right brain activities include balance, emotions, music, and visualization, all of which can really enhance performance. The Sports Psychologist trains the athlete to exercise the right brain along with the left brain. For example, teaching mental toughness skills (including intensity, confidence and emotions during key moments in competition) critically important in peak performance.
Overcoming pressure is another right brain activity that can be taught to athletes. These skills include recognizing the causes of emotions during key moments in competition and how to modify those emotions, if necessary.
Sports Psychology and Stress Management
Stress management skills are critical and necessary if the athlete wants to compete successfully and consistently. Interestingly, a certain amount of tension (i.e., being on edge, pumped up, psyched) is crucial for peak performance to be maintained. In fact, the athlete with too much relaxation is at the same disadvantage as the athlete with too much tension. The key for each athlete is to learn where the exact mixture of relaxation and tension lies. This is where the Clinical Sports Psychologist with hypnosis training can really help the athlete zone in on that level and learn to modify it as game conditions warrant. Too much tension is lowered by deep breathing and calming thoughts and not enough tension is raised by jumping, exercises, etc. to raise the heart beat.
Sports Psychology and Goal Setting
Goal setting, while a left brain activity, is closely linked with right brain activities, such as emotions, patience, optimism and learning to overcome obstacles. These are also key skills that the Sports Psychologist can teach the athlete.
In addition, there are many issues in an athlete's life that can impact her/his sports performance. Relationship stressors, personality traits (e.g., perfectionism, anger vulnerability), attention deficits, mood changes, and the lack of life skills (e.g., assertiveness) are just a few of the factors that can dramatically impact ones performance on the playing field. Consequently, a comprehensive initial history and mental status exam is necessary in order to plan the treatment. In fact, many parents bring their youngsters to me in order to teach them life skills that will also be used in their sport. For example, the young athlete who gets overly anxious during competition also gets overly anxious prior to taking a test. The same coping skills can be taught for both issues.
Perhaps the best right brain skill the athlete can learn is self-hypnosis and visualization. I have referred to these skill sets as the "unfair advantage," because they really propel athletes to enhance their performance.

Re: Discover 5 Traps of Internet Marketing that Derail Business
- [quote="Donna":gj06obvi]
I started working as a full time freelancer a couple of years ago and I have noticed that so many people think there is instant money to be made online.
Donna[/quote:gj06obvi]
This is true. Many years ago when I first started my SF webzine, my only ad partner at the time was Amazon.com. I confidently expected to get dozens of orders a day, and be a millionaire within a year without ever having to do lift a finger - after my initial articles had been published to the web.
Of course it didnt' turn out like that at all, and if I'd been dependent on that zine to make a living wage, I'd've had to quit right then and there. Even when I started with Google Ad Sense I was also expecting to make money quite quickly... and it took that three or four years to get to a decent level.
(And, as I keep pointing out, had I started with my Sports Zine first, all this might have been so different, as the topic of sports is probably 300% more popular than science fiction...)
On the other hand, by persevering, I got a lot of experience in my chosen field, and was ready to do some good stuff once it occurred to me to go on the Sports kick....
How Many Hours A Week Do You Watch TV?
- About a year ago or so, I completely cut off my cable TV.
Food Network was the only channel I miss but I really don't miss it more than I expected. News, Sports, you know, the stuff you thought be hard to miss out on, I never realized how unimportant they could be and my "selective ignorance" really hasn't hurt my life.
If I want news, I could always turn on to the Internet.
How about you?
Warmest Regards,
Takuya
Re: What I'm reading this weekend - Sept 24, 2010
- Glad you enjoy the lists guys! It does take some time to prepare and I can't vouch 100% for the content - these were just blog posts / articles that caught my attention - I usually skim the text for points that stick out for me and then bookmark the ones I like to read "later"
I had to assign a time to "later" so that it actually happened and weekend reading at a local coffee shop became a perfect fit. I used to read the entire local newspaper but found that it didn't really add much value to my life. Now I just read the Sports and Business sections and then on to my saved blog posts!
David - Zen Habits is a great blog - I haven't read Leo's book so I can't say how good a product he has but his blog is top notch if that's any indication. I might look into his program myself!
What's your Business, Ladies?
- Hello Ladies (Of course, men are always welcome to join the conversation),
I thought it might be fun if we were to all share WHAT our businesses are and WHY we started our businesses. As a community, it could help us get to know one another better and keep each other in mind when an opportunity comes up.
I'm sure many who visit this Forum also have much value to offer the others here. Perhaps, it will encourage those women readers who haven't shared with us yet, to tell us what they are up to. We have such an opportunity here to encourage one another in our endeavours.
I'll go first: My Coaching Business is to [i:1vk6e1aa]inspire women to use their "genius" to excel in business [/i:1vk6e1aa] and still find time for what they love to do! It is highly rewarding career and I love it!
I started my business because I really wanted to make a difference in the world. I love to see people succeed and this gives me the opportunity to really invite them to step into their full potential, NOW. I also believe we should all be able to support ourselves by getting paid for what we love to do.
I'm also an Entrepreneur. My current endeavour is opening a Sports Consignment and Cappuccino Bar in our "active lifestyle" tourist town. We're hoping to be open early summer.
It's your turn. Please share with us!
Warmly,
Tami
Re: Hi From START.ac CrowdFunding
- Hi Mal,
I would love to explain a little further. START(dot)ac is a new International CrowdFunding website, and we are launching this May 2012. CrowdFunding is when a large number of people each contribute a small amount of money to fund a project. We are forming a website to host these projects on, and building a strong and large community of individuals who are interested in helping the "next big thing" be a success. Imagine if you were there for the beginning of Google or Apple, and your donations of $1 or $500 helped to bring it to life! Along with major bragging rights, if a project is successful, people who funded it get rewards depending on how much money they gave the project.
At the summary level - We expands the CrowdFunding market to make a home for startup businesses and technology products. STARTac is the professional CrowdFunding site for startups and tech products. We also accept projects in many other categories (listed at the bottom).
We have made nine innovations that improve upon the status quo in CrowdFunding. One is that we have inverted the selection process of projects. Potential projects go into CrowdAudition™, where our members give feedback and advice to improve the projects where relevant. The members' input plays a key role in selection of which projects go to funding. Taking this approach also means that rejected project' drivers know why they were rejected, and can better decide if and how to improve their current project, or start from scratch.
We are assembling a bench of Mentors - experienced entrepreneurs and executives who want to help the new guys avoid the mistakes they made.
Please let me know what you think. When we launch we will be revealing all of our nine innovative programs to the public. We are also looking for projects to host on our website for when we launch. These projects will get extra media attention and publicity throughout our social media. If you have any other questions, PLEASE feel free to ask!
The categories of projects we accept are below:

Dance
Design
Do Good (altruistic projects)
Fashion
