Setting Healthy Boundaries at Work - By Joan Burge

I hope all of you had an incredible weekend and enjoyed it with your loved ones. Mine was terrific as it was spent with my children. I keep calling them “children” even though they are young adults. While things are constantly changing, one thing that is constant is when you are a parent you are always a parent.

Speaking of change, I recently presented the topic of change to two different groups. It’s always a great reminder for me when I get to speak on this topic, as to just how much and how quickly things change. The best part of the speech is when I provide strategies for thriving on change, because it reinforces my belief that we can thrive on change if we choose.

This week, focus on the opportunity in every change. Even in an event that we might consider negative (such as an illness), there is always a lesson to learn.

Thriving on Change

  1. Anticipate. Try to guess where things are going. Keep your ears and eyes open. Know what is going on around you at work, in your community, and with you family. You can then do #2.
  2. Prepare. Get relevant information. Stay informed. Make specific plans for the upcoming changes so you feel more in control. Be active, not passive.
  3. Visualize. Imagine yourself positively in the new situation. Look for the good. With change comes both danger and opportunity. See both, but focus on the opportunity.
  4. Accept the change. Don’t fight change that is inevitable. Be flexible. Learn to adapt as quickly as you can.
  5. Get support. Share your feelings with a trusted friend or family member. Or talk to someone who will encourage you, lift you up and inspire you in case your family can’t support you or your change because they are afraid for you.
All the best to you as you strive to thrive on change!
