Dedicated Web Hosting

What is dedicated web hosting and who should be using it? Have you ever asked yourself those questions? From what it is, to its advantages and disadvantages, to the costs, this article is here to help you out with some of the major questions surrounding dedicated web hosting. By the end, you’ll have a better idea as to what it is and whether or not it’s for you.

What it is is a type of web hosting that allows webmasters – either individuals or businesses – to lease pre-configured equipment and connectivity from a hosting service provider. What that means in English is simply this: instead of sharing a whole bunch of server space with other people, you will be able to lease an entire one for yourself. What good does that do? Why would somebody need an entire server to themselves?

Well, first of all, because you have the whole thing to yourself, the costs necessarily go up. But, people who do it swear that the benefits outweigh the costs. First, they have more control. If anything goes wrong with your site, you have only yourself to blame. But, on the other hand, you no longer have to worry about someone else crashing the same server that you’re on.

Dedicated web hosting also lets your visitors experience faster load times. The server is only dealing with requests from your site and no one else’s, so there will be no virtual line, so to speak, for websites. Plus, you no longer have to worry about any bandwidth penalty. People who use this service generally need a lot of bandwidth in the first place, so no restrictions are set on your usage.

The benefits of this type of hosting program are many, but they usually boil down to two key aspects: control and reliability. On the flip side of the coin, however, lie the disadvantages. One disadvantage in particular stops people dead in their tracks once they uncover it, and that is cost.

Although the price of this kind of service is continually coming down thanks to the growth in popularity of it, it is still on the high side. In the past, typical prices have ranged anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars per month. While that has come down a bit in recent times, it is still expensive.

Another disadvantage of dedicated web hosting is the amount of technical skill needed to see it through. Since you have almost total control that means you also have to look out for hackers, troubleshoot any system problems, install and configure programs, and more. If you don’t have the necessary administration skills, it could just wind up giving you more headaches and costing you more in the long run.

As a small business owner, you need to decide if this type of program is best for your site or not. What kind of resources, flexibility and customization do you need to run your business online? Do you have the skills to handle it on your own?

Re: New Google Tool Makes Websites Twice as Fast Re: New Google Tool Makes Websites Twice as Fast - Hey Mal, Thanks for taking the initiative and posting an update here. Glad to hear they have been looking into it and have made it available for those with a VPS or Dedicated Server. I imagine at some point it will be available to those with shared hosting, and I'm willing to wait. Or, at some point I may just need to upgrade to a VPS myself, so only time will tell I guess... lol.
Re: New Google Tool Makes Websites Twice as Fast Re: New Google Tool Makes Websites Twice as Fast - Hi Members, I raised a ticket with HG asking the question including the link and this is the reply that I have just received:- "The link that was included in your message appears to have been truncated. However, we think that you are referring to Google's Apache module, mod_pagespeed. At the current time, Hostgator is still evaluating it in a shared environment. We can only offer an unmanaged installation on a Dedicated Server or a VPS at this time". regards, Mal.

Managing Your Website Managing Your Website - Hi Beat I know what you are talking about when you say it could be a frustrating experience. I would recommend to every business owner to find a website partner who can handle the Website Design/SEO/Hosting by themselves while still at a reasonable cost to your business. This is the most economical way to operate the online side of your business if you are unsure about it. I actually do this for a few clients myself and all I do is send them a bill every year for hosting/seo but if there are any problems its up to me to call the hosting company to find out what's wrong as well as keep them high ranking for particular keywords. If anyone else has found it difficult with their website, hosting or the management of any online services please post your feedback here and I'll try to advise your best option.
