Internet Web Hosting

If you’re a small business owner and you don’t have a website yet, then I have one question for you: What are you waiting for? These days, anyone who doesn’t have a website pretty much doesn’t exist. More and more customers are turning to the Internet to not only find the information they’re looking for, but also to buy products and services directly. As entrepreneurs, we need to get in on the action. But chances are, if you’ve come to this website, then Internet web hosting is something you’ve already begun to think about. So, kudos! And let’s begin.

This article is going to outline for you some of the basics about bandwidth - something you should be familiarizing yourself before you jump in and create a website. Unless you know what all the thousands of different web hosting providing companies are promising you, you won’t be able to make an informed decision, or the decision that is best for your company.

First of all, understand the concept of bandwidth. That is the amount of data traffic that can be supported in theory from one computer to another, or the amount that actually is, in a given period of time. Why does that matter to you? If you don’t purchase enough bandwidth and you go over your needs, you will be hit with heavy overage charges, or your site will crash from the heavy traffic.

How do you decide how much bandwidth you need for your particular Internet web hosting package? First of all, determine what kind of content you will be hosting on your site. If you’re going to have thousands of pages, lots of images and video files, and you expect a heavy amount of traffic, then you’re going to have high-bandwidth requirements. Conversely, if you only plan to have a few pages with a simple layout, then you will have low-bandwidth needs.

Now, there are some techniques you can use in order to minimize the bandwidth that you need, and make your site look finished in the meantime. First of all, keep the file size of your pages as small as possible. Don’t include too many images, and make sure the ones you do include are compressed .jpeg or .gif files. You can also compress your pages to make them more compact. Another trick is not to offer too many files for download. Even if you want your website to be a portal for information, try offering files that are no more than 2megs in size.

Using the tips above should help you calculate how much bandwidth you’re going to require. Of course, you can’t predict levels of traffic – that will only come with your launch and then some time. But, bear in mind that you can always order more bandwidth if you need to. And remember, although it will cost you more, more bandwidth usually means you’re getting more traffic, which is always a good thing.
