Personal Web Hosting
These days, it’s not just teenagers and fan clubs that are getting into building website. Anyone who’s anyone – or rather, anyone who wants to be taken seriously in today’s professional world – needs to have their own personal website. This article will help you fill in the blanks when it comes to the why’s and how’s of personal web hosting.
First of all, it’s important to understand just what exactly a personal website can do for you. Even if you’re an employee at a company that already has a website, building your own personal site can help tremendously boost your image. It can help extend your circle of contacts and can come in handy if you’re thinking of a career or job change.
A prime example of this is Matt Cutts, a Google employee who started up his own blog and has now begun to carve out his own reputation and identity independent of Google. He has established a loyal following and is cementing his place in the blogosphere. If he ever chooses to leave Google, there will already be thousands of people out there who will know his name and what he is capable of.
Another reason you need personal web hosting draws on what I mentioned before about a career change. If you’re job hunting and don’t want your current employer to find out about it just yet, it won’t do you any good to hand out a resume with your email address from that company. On the other hand, you also don’t want to be distributing a free email addresses such as a hotmail or yahoo one. If you want to be taken seriously, you need to have a personal website and your own personal email address.
If you’re just starting up your own website, then by all means, test out and experiment with the myriad of free service providers that are out there. But there is only so long a free account will take you. Referring contacts to a free server looks unprofessional and cluttered, not to mention the number of banners, frames, or other online ads that could pop up in their face.
Use a free hosting company until you’re familiar with how building a website works, and then pay the few extra dollars to get your own domain name, and a website that is ad-free. Trust me; it will be worth the price.
Remember above anything else that your own personal web page is going to be the online reflection of you. If visitors to your site see nothing but bright yellow flashing ads or illegible blue script, what do you think they’re going to think about you? Do you think they’ll see you as someone professional and reliable? Or rather as someone who doesn’t know much about the Internet and isn’t worth trusting in a business context? The risk is yours.
