Shared Web Hosting

Shared Web Hosting

Are you new to the online hosting scene and wondering what shared web hosting is all about? This article is here to help you understand the basics of a virtual hosting service in the hopes that by the end, you will be able to make a more informed decision about what is right for you and your online needs.

At its heart, this type of hosting service is where many websites are all hosted on one web server that is connected to the Internet. Each has its own section on the server that is separate from other sites, but sharing allows for a more economical option since all of the website owners pool their resources to share the costs of the server and its maintenance.

Besides the economic benefit of saving money, what this type of hosting service also allows for is shared system administration. What that means is that the administration of the server as a whole is shared by all of the users. So, for those who don’t want to deal with the hassles of any of that, they don’t have to; they can just pass off their responsibilities to the users who are more technologically interested and inclined. On the other hand, for those users who do want greater control, this type of sharing is usually not ideal since it places greater restrictions on them than they would otherwise like.

There are thousands of shared web hosting service providers across the U.S. and Canada. Each is responsible for the management of the servers, installation of software, security, and so on, so even if you know nothing about Linux, Plesk, SQL, or the like, you should be ok.

If you’re a small business owner and you’re concerned about not going over a limited budget, then this type of service would be ideal for you. Often times, newbies are worried about security and performance issued on a shared server, but most reliable web hosting providers would never compromise on that sort of thing. They’re also monitored around the clock so you can be assured of high uptime percentages. After all, the more times they have problems, the more clients they will have breathing down their necks.

There are, however, some disadvantages that should e noted. First of all, because the sever space is being shared, there will inevitably be slower response times than as if you were on a dedicated server. Now, this doesn’t mean slow response times – only slower, relatively speaking, and most websites can handle that.

Another drawback of shared web hosting is when it comes to getting banned by search engines. All it takes is one bad website and your shared IP address will be banned from the likes of Google. You can pay extra to get a dedicated IP address to avoid that problem, but then again, it depends on your available budget.

Before you make your decision, make sure you’re well informed about both the pros and cons. For more information, visit 1 and 1 Internet.
