Top 10 Web Hosting

These days it seems as if top 10 lists are all the rage. It doesn’t matter if people are looking to buy a house or new shampoo for their dogs, top 10 lists are where they turn to find out about their options. Well, instead of jumping on the bandwagon and offering you my top 10 web hosting providers, I thought I would instead discuss some of the basics of web hosting so that when it does come time to make a decision, yours will be well informed.

First of all, what is a web hosting service in the first place? Basically, it is a type of Internet service that allows individuals, organizations, companies and what have you the chance to provide their own websites that will be accessible to everyone on the Internet. Essentially, you are renting space on a company’s server and the connection to the Internet.

The most basic type of hosting service is what we are all familiar with – the webpage. But beyond that, there are other options which you might consider depending on your needs. There are also small-scale file hosting sites, where you can upload files via File Transfer Protocol (FTP). If that interest you, look for a service provider that offers that as part of its website hosting package. Often times, this service is offered free to those who are already clients.

The reason a top 10 web hosting list would be irrelevant is because everybody’s needs are different. Depending on whether you want to host a personal site, letting friends and family browse through all of your wedding pictures, or whether you want to startup a website for your company, your needs are going to be vastly different. And, it is your needs that will dictate what kind of package you can sign up for. For instance, while personal web hosting services are usually free and ad-supported, more sophisticated sites will require more comprehensive packages.

If you are thinking about starting a website for your company, think about whether you want to be able to sell your product or service directly online. If so, you’ll need to find a hosting provider that has experience and offers service in e-commerce and SSL. Be careful when you’re searching for companies through review forums or searchable directories since many are nothing more than paid advertisements for individual companies.

When you hear people talking about hosting reliability and hosting uptime, do you know what they mean? Basically, that refers to the amount of time that the host is actually online and accessible on the Internet. So, if a customer surfs over to your page, they are going to find you instead of a 404 invalid file. That is crucially important when you’re running a small business, since every customer who finds your site down is potential money lost. You need to find a reputable company that can guarantee your uptime. Look for details relating to that in your Service Level Agreement.

So, sorry folks, there was no top 10 web hosting list. But I hope the information I have provided will give you a better foundation to make the right decision.

Re: Top 10 Young Entrepreneurs Re: Top 10 Young Entrepreneurs - I notice a trend with most of those young entrepreneurs. They started an entertainment-related business that has skyrocketed in popularity. From YouTube, to Runescape, to Gaming, to File Hosting - all are the most popular brands of their kind. Managing Your Website Managing Your Website - Hi Beat I know what you are talking about when you say it could be a frustrating experience. I would recommend to every business owner to find a website partner who can handle the Website Design/SEO/Hosting by themselves while still at a reasonable cost to your business. This is the most economical way to operate the online side of your business if you are unsure about it. I actually do this for a few clients myself and all I do is send them a bill every year for hosting/seo but if there are any problems its up to me to call the hosting company to find out what's wrong as well as keep them high ranking for particular keywords. If anyone else has found it difficult with their website, hosting or the management of any online services please post your feedback here and I'll try to advise your best option.
Successful Website Successful Website - Hi TheAnonymousMan, It has been very interesting to read all these postes. Your recommendation is to find a website partner who can handle the website design, keywords, SEO, Hosting etc. Your suggestion is helpful, but how can you find a good partner. When you help someone, do you give instructions as how to do it, so that in the end he will be able to do it himself. Your charge is in Australian Dollars, I presume and it is quite reasonable. I am sure one can contact a local company, but the fees could be much bigger here in England. Do you talk on Skype and help like that? Recently I learned that there are too many people out there, wanting to achieve great success and get ensnared with so many programs and information. The result is that the 'head knowledge' has increased, without getting down to do it. We need more hands on and do it, even do it afraid. Finally, how can I find someone like you here in the UK? What if the business a startup is trying to launch is completely an online venture? Wouldn't it be more practical (and cost efficient, especially in the long run) for that entrepreneur to learn how to create or at least update his/her own website? In fact, a lot of times, I hear how startups tend to give too many shares of the company to their partnering web designer, only to regret it later. How much should one give?
