First, look for a company that has experience. I can’t stress it enough. Experience is the only thing that matters when it comes down to it. You don’t want to trust your site to a group of newbies that are just out to take your money. You want people who know what they’re doing, who have been doing it for years, and who will help you get to where you want to go.
The Internet is a scary place when it comes to determining experience, because there is often little you can do to find out the true extent of a company’s history and record. And, since it’s as easy as 1-2-3 to start up a website these days, you never know who is really behind that hosting company. Look for a company that is willing to be completely open and honest with you about their history. If you can’t get a straight answer or a portfolio of past successes and clients, then move on.
The second most important thing about finding a reputable web hosting provider is customer support. Of course, if you’ve found an experienced company, then chances are they’ll have a solid system of support in place as well. But, it never hurts to take a second look.
What you want is a company that provides you with 24/7 support, and I don’t mean that they have a support contact form that you can fill out at any time of day or night. I mean that they have a 1-800 telephone number that you can call whenever you need to and speak to a real, live person. If you have a problem at 3am on a Sunday, is someone going to be there to help you out? If not, then move on.
Now, it should go without saying, but I’m going to say it again: always read anything before you sign it. I don’t care how small the font is, how many attachments you’re sent, or how busy you are, if you don’t take the time to read any service agreement that you’re about to sign, then you deserve whatever is coming to you.
Finally, you want to get on board with a web hosting provider that does nothing else by host websites. Find out where the company’s revenues come from. If it’s not solely from web hosting, then move on. You’re going to be completely focused on building a stellar website and you deserve a hosting company that is going to do the same for you.

If I had a penny for every nightmare story a customer has told me about their web hosting provider, well, needless to say, I’d be rich. From rushing to sign an agreement too early to not even reading what they’re signing, entrepreneurs looking to get online often do not take the time they should to understand what they’re getting themselves into. So, how can you avoid their same fates?
